The series creator and leading lady got candid about how she feels now that the show\u2019s over during an <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2021\/12\/insecure-finale-spoilers-issa-rae-interview-jay-ellis-yvonne-orji-hbo-1234901822\/\">interview<\/a> with Deadline. Plus, she revealed that fan reactions and opinions on the ending don\u2019t matter to her one bit.<\/p>\n<p>When asked if she was concerned fans would react negatively to Issa and Lawrence getting back together in the finale, Rae said, \u201cI don\u2019t give a f*** how people react to it, because to answer your question, it was a journey for both of our characters, to be honest.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The creator went on to explain how at the beginning of the season, she was sure Issa would move past Lawrence. But that changed as the storyline progressed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u200b\u200bI am a firm believer that sometimes you need time, and if it\u2019s right for you and you want it, then it can be yours,\u201d Rae told Deadline. She said later, \u201cA lot of people hate Lawrence, but luckily, it\u2019s not their relationship.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And some viewers take that hatred to the extreme. According to \u201cInsecure\u201d actor Jay Ellis, who plays Lawrence in the series, one fan became so angry over fictional situations on the show that she physically attacked him in an airport.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYeah, I got slapped in JFK,\u201d Ellis told Jemele Hill during a podcast <a href=\"https:\/\/news.yahoo.com\/got-slapped-jfk-insecure-actor-020000490.html\">interview<\/a>. \u201c[The fan] literally slapped me and went \u2018Oh my God, Oh my God. I\u2019m so sorry. I\u2019m just so pissed at you, Lawrence,\u2019\u201d the actor recalled. \u201cShe was like, \u2018And you\u2019d think I know better because I\u2019m a writer.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite strong feelings about character relationships, \u201cInsecure\u201d on HBO has received widespread praise and earned multiple Emmy and Golden Globe nominations. But there have been criticisms as well.<\/p>\n<p>Rae recalled being asked to add white characters to the all black cast to give the show more universal appeal.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom the jump in creating the show, it was put in my mind that you had to have a white character to be a bridge, and for people to care, for it to get awards, for it to be considered worthy of the television canon,\u201d Rae said during an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mic.com\/culture\/issa-rae-cover-story-october-2021\">interview<\/a> with Mic.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[A colleague] was just like, \u2018Girl, if you want this sh** to set off to the next level, you got to put a white character in there, then white people will care about it, then NPR is going to write about your shit, and it\u2019ll blow up,\u2019\u201d the actress continued.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>After adding in the character Freida, who was white, Rae didn\u2019t agree with giving her too much screen time. \u201cAnd I was like, \u2018F*** no! This is not a show about Freida!\u2019\u201d She went on to say, \u201cThat was when I started actively resisting.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>After ditching the Frieda story, Rae recalled feeling better about the narrative. \u201cWe got rid of the We Got Y\u2019all storyline.
