Wade<\/em>, died on Sunday at the age of 76.<\/p>\n<p>In a Twitter post on Sunday, Susan Hays, a former student of Weddington\u2019s and current&nbsp;Texas agriculture commissioner, said Weddington died Sunday morning in Texas due to complications from \u201chealth issues.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cSarah Weddington died this morning after a series of health issues. With Linda Coffee she filed the first case of her legal career, Roe v. Wade, fresh out of law school. She was my professor at UT, the best writing instructor I ever had, and a great mentor,\u201d announced Hays.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt 27 she argued Roe to SCOTUS. (A fact that always made me feel like a gross underachiever.). Ironically, she worked on the case because law firms would not hire women in the early 70s, leaving her with lots of time for good trouble,\u201d added Hays.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">At 27 she argued Roe to SCOTUS. Ironically, she worked on the case because law firms would not hire women in the early 70s, leaving her with lots of time for good trouble. 2\/<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Susan Hays (@hays4ag) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hays4ag\/status\/1475222037677461507?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">December 26, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>With a 7-2 vote, the Supreme Court legalized abortion across the United States in 1973, declaring it a constitutional right. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2021\/dec\/26\/sarah-weddington-attorney-who-won-roe-v-wade-abortion-case-dies-aged-76\">Speaking<\/a> with <em>the Guardian <\/em>in 2017 during the confirmation process for Justice Neil Gorsuch, Weddington warned that <em>Roe&nbsp;<\/em>could be overturned if enough conservative judges were appointed to the Supreme Court.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf [Neil] Gorsuch\u2019s nomination is approved, will abortion be illegal the next day? No. One new judge won\u2019t necessarily make much difference. But two or three might,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Just a little over four years after her prophetic statement, the fate of <em>Roe v. Wade<\/em> now hangs in the balance as the Supreme Court <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/news\/supreme-court-set-to-hear-arguments-in-landmark-mississippi-abortion-case\/\">considers<\/a> a law in Mississippi that bans abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy. At this point, the Supreme Court has not yet <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2021\/12\/10\/1053628779\/supreme-court-refuse-to-block-texas-abortion-law-as-legal-fights-move-forward\">blocked<\/a> the law out of Texas that effectively bans abortions after six of pregnancy.<\/p>\n<p>In the same interview with <em>the Guardian<\/em>, Weddington revealed that she received an abortion in 1967 and encouraged women to share similar stories to eliminate the shame.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJust before the anaesthesia hit,\u201d she said, \u201cI thought: \u2018I hope no one ever knows about this.\u2019 For a lot of years, that was exactly the way I felt. Now there\u2019s a major push to encourage women to tell their stories so people will realize that it is not a shameful thing. One out of every five women will have an abortion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhatever else I do in my life, the headline on my obituary is always going to be \u2018Roe v Wade attorney dies.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Sarah Weddington was a Texas giant. John Bucy III (@BucyForTexas) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BucyForTexas\/status\/1475223889005490176?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">December 26, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Norma McCorvey, who was 21 at the time and suffered years of abuse prior to getting pregnant and did not end up getting the abortion, would later regret her involvement in the case and joined the pro-life cause. As Jacqulyne Anton <a href=\"https:\/\/scholarworks.lib.csusb.edu\/cgi\/viewcontent.cgi?article=1006&amp;context=history-in-the-making\">wrote<\/a> in&nbsp;<em>History in the Making<\/em>, McCorvey was a scared 21-year-old girl and had no idea she was being used for a national movement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was a reserved, unsure, and troubled woman seeking a way out of a pregnancy she wanted no part of,\u201d noted Anton. \u201cNevertheless, Norma McCorvey undeniably became the protagonist in the fight against the antiabortion legislature.
