Following his answer to that, Fauci turned to masking on airplanes, which is still federally mandated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut with regard to the spread of virus in the country, I mean, I think if you look at wearing a mask and the filtration on planes, things are reasonably safe,\u201d Fauci said. \u201cWe want to make sure people keep their masks on. I think the idea of taking masks off, in my mind, is really not something we should even be considering\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Karl replied, noting the recent remarks by airline CEOs that cabin air is some of the cleanest among indoor spaces.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd of course, the airline CEOs were suggesting that, you know, that we may not \u2014 may no longer need a mask. I hear you loud and clearly, you disagree with that on an \u2014 on the airplane,\u201d Karl said.<\/p>\n[embedded content]\n<p>During a recent Senate hearing, as The Daily Wire <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/major-airline-ceos-push-back-on-plane-mask-mandates-case-is-very-strong-that-masks-dont-add-much\">reported<\/a>, American Airlines CEO Doug Parker and Southwest Airlines CEO Gary Kelly spoke about the air quality on airplanes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think the case is very strong that masks don\u2019t add much, if anything, in the air cabin environment,\u201d Kelly said. \u201cIt is very safe and very high quality compared to any other indoor setting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Parker echoed Kelly, and added that planes \u201call have the same HEPA filters and air flow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Of course, as CNN <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2021\/12\/15\/business\/airline-ceos-question-masks-on-plane-rule\/index.html\">wrote<\/a>: \u201cSara Nelson, the president of the Association of Flight Attendants, testified at the hearing that not all aircraft are equipped with the same quality of air filters. For example, some older planes do not have HEPA filters, she said.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, a spokesperson for American Airlines later <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/regulation\/transportation\/586072-airline-executive-says-masks-dont-add-much-on-flights\">walked back<\/a> Parker\u2019s comments: \u201cAs noted in Doug\u2019s testimony, we support the federal mask mandate, and masks are an important part of our commitment to keeping our customers and team members healthy and safe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The federal transportation mask mandate has been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/statements-releases\/2021\/12\/02\/fact-sheet-president-biden-announces-new-actions-to-protect-americans-against-the-delta-and-omicron-variants-as-we-battle-covid-19-this-winter\/\">extended<\/a> multiple times, and is now set to expire on March 18, 2022, unless another extension is granted.<\/p>\n<p>TRANSCRIPT:<\/p>\n<p><em>FAUCI: But with regard to the spread of virus in the country, I mean, I think if you look at wearing a mask and the filtration on planes, things are reasonably safe.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>We want to make sure people keep their masks on. I think the idea of taking masks off, in my mind, is really not something we should even be considering \u2026 but that\u2019s what we meant by it depends on what the goal of getting people vaccinated before they get on a domestic flight.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>KARL: Yes. And of course, the airline CEOs were suggesting that, you know, that we may not \u2014 may no longer need a mask.
