(STR\/AFP via Getty Images)<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cUpon all who mourn his passing in the sure and certain hope of the resurrection, Pope Francis invokes the divine blessings of peace and consolation in the Lord Jesus,\u201d it concludes.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>The pope\u2019s statement joins an outpouring of affection and appreciation for the archbishop, who died Sunday at the age of 90.<\/p>\n<p>Tutu\u2019s death \u201cis another chapter of bereavement in our nation\u2019s farewell to a generation of outstanding South Africans who have bequeathed us a liberated South Africa,\u201d said South African President Cyril Ramaphosa in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>A champion of South Africa\u2019s anti-apartheid movement in the 1980s, Tutu\u2019s campaigning took a more controversial turn in later years as he pushed for the recognition of same-sex marriage, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lifesitenews.com\/news\/pro-abortion-archbishop-tutus-invitation-to-a-catholic-university-mind-bogg\/\">abortion<\/a>, and assisted suicide as \u201ccivil rights.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tutu\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/national-security\/2016\/01\/04\/lesbian-daughter-archbishop-desmond-tutu-marries-partner-netherlands\/\">daughter<\/a>, the Rev.
