Those self-defense products could now render them criminals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">&#8220;I think that this is not related to the product; it&#8217;s related to the political situation,&#8221; said<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Siboni, a retired Israel Defense Forces colonel<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>who began making the bulletproof knapsacks in 2012.\u00a0&#8220;It&#8217;s a progressive thing, banning anything that is related to protecting from gunshots or from pistols.&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:1,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:291}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">New York law already makes it\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nysenate.gov\/legislation\/laws\/PEN\/270.20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">a crime<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0to use body armor while committing a gun crime.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Jacobson&#8217;s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nyassembly.gov\/leg\/?default_fld=&amp;leg_video=&amp;bn=A00352&amp;term=&amp;Summary=Y&amp;Actions=Y&amp;Text=Y\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">bill<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0would make it illegal to possess any &#8220;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nysenate.gov\/legislation\/laws\/PEN\/270.20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">bullet-resistant soft body armor<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">&#8221; that is rated to stop shots from at least a .38\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">caliber<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0handgun. Most bulletproof backpacks on the market are rated to stop far more powerful rounds. He said his company&#8217;s protective backpacks, which are sold in major retailers such as Office Depot, are almost exclusively purchased by law-abiding civilians.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:1,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:291}\">\u00a0The products have proven especially popular among parents\u2014a\u00a02019 Morning Consult poll\u00a0found\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/morningconsult.com\/2019\/09\/06\/as-kids-go-back-to-school-47-of-parents-show-interest-in-bulletproof-backpacks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">47 percent of parents<\/a>\u00a0have considered buying one for their children.<b>\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We\u2019re specializing in bulletproof backpacks that are used for consumers, they&#8217;re used for youth, they&#8217;re used for travelers,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Brad\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Pedell<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, cofounder of\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.221btactical.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">221B Tactical<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0in New York City, said the bulletproof backpacks and vests he sells go mostly to concerned, everyday people, security guards, and reporters. He said parents and the elderly buy the products out of concern they or their children could be attacked in a city that saw 447 murders\u2014a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/12\/29\/nyregion\/nyc-2020-crime-covid.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">near-decade high<\/a>\u2014in 2020<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&#8220;People that come in here are concerned. Jacobson now wants to institute the strictest body armor laws too, but\u00a0Siboni doubted it would solve the problem either because &#8220;criminals are criminals&#8221; and will find ways around the law.<b>\u00a0<\/b>Pedell<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0said bulletproof backpacks and vests are purely defensive products that\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">cannot<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0be used to hurt anyone.
