The move comes after Newsom chose to commute the inmate\u2019s sentence in March, making him eligible for early release.<\/p>\n<p>Rodney Patrick McNeal, a former San Bernardino County probation officer, was sentenced to 30 years to life in prison in 2000 on two counts of second-degree murder. He was convicted of killing his wife, Debra Black Crow, who was six months pregnant at the time. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sbsun.com\/2020\/03\/29\/former-san-bernardino-county-probation-officer-convicted-of-killing-pregnant-wife-among-newsoms-commutations\/\">According<\/a> to The Los Angeles Daily News, \u201cher body was found submerged in a bathtub in their home, with stab wounds, injuries from being beaten and strangulation marks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMr. McNeal\u2019s violent conduct toward Ms. Blackcrow McNeal not only ended her life, but also had a devastating impact on her family, community, and Tribal Nation,\u201d Newsom <a href=\"https:\/\/nativenewsonline.net\/currents\/california-gov-gavin-newsom-reverses-parole-for-convicted-killer-of-oglala-woman\">said<\/a> on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>The San Gabriel Valley Tribune <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sbsun.com\/2021\/02\/01\/highland-man-convicted-of-killing-pregnant-wife-denied-parole-governors-decision-praised-by-advocate-for-native-american-women\/\">reports<\/a>\u00a0Gov. Newsom \u201csaid McNeal must also be able to understand and address the fact that his violent conduct against Debra McNeal, a member of the Oglala Sioux Tribe, occurred within the context of a national epidemic of violence against native women.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have considered the evidence in the record that is relevant to whether Mr. McNeal is currently dangerous,\u201d he continued. \u201cWhen considered as a whole, I find the evidence shows that he currently poses an unreasonable danger to society if released from prison at this time. Therefore, I reverse the decision to parole Mr. McNeal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>McNeal, 51, was <a href=\"https:\/\/abc7.com\/rodney-mcneal-parole-debra-murder-governor-gavin-newsom\/7268959\/\">granted parole<\/a> in October and had been scheduled to be freed on November 13, 2020. However, his release was delayed and he remained incarcerated as the family of Debra Black Crow and allies pressured Newsom to keep McNeal behind bars. Gavin Newsom Reverses Parole for Convicted Killer of Oglala Woman <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/gxdo1raVzH\">https:\/\/t.co\/gxdo1raVzH<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Native News Online (@nativenews_net) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/nativenews_net\/status\/1356351514755923971?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 1, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Shantel Haynes, the daughter of Debra Black Crow from a previous marriage, issued a statement that read, in part: \u201cThis reversal of the parole grant shows that justice can be retained for domestic violence victims, collateral victims, missing and murdered indigenous women, and proves that people in law enforcement will be held accountable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sbsun.com\/2021\/02\/01\/highland-man-convicted-of-killing-pregnant-wife-denied-parole-governors-decision-praised-by-advocate-for-native-american-women\/\">More details<\/a> from The San Gabriel Valley Tribune:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>The San Bernardino County District Attorney\u2019s Office announced the governor\u2019s decision and commended the efforts of the victim\u2019s daughter, different groups and the community at a news\u00a0 conference on Monday, Grace Underwood, a spokeswoman for the DA\u2019s Office, said.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0<\/em><em>District Attorney Jason Anderson was thrilled with the outcome, Underwood said.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0<\/em><em>Shantel Haynes\u2019 work on the case included starting a petition on<\/em><em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.change.org\/\">change.org<\/a> that drew 7,323 signatures, contacting the governor\u2019s office and getting her mother\u2019s tribe and two South Dakota politicians to write letters to the governor, Underwood said.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Newsom sparked controversy last year after he had written a commutation letter for McNeal that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sbsun.com\/2020\/03\/29\/former-san-bernardino-county-probation-officer-convicted-of-killing-pregnant-wife-among-newsoms-commutations\/\">said<\/a>, \u201cMr. McNeal has committed himself to his self-improvement.\u201d Meanwhile, San Bernardino County District Attorney Jason Anderson went on to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iheart.com\/podcast\/john-and-ken-on-demand-20635765\/episode\/john-ken-show-hour-1-77016014\/\">reportedly<\/a> claim McNeal was not reformed and sold heroin while in prison.<\/p>\n<p>Through a public records request, KFI News reporter Steven Gregory obtained a document from the state corrections office that he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iheart.com\/podcast\/john-and-ken-on-demand-20635765\/episode\/john-ken-show-hour-1-77016014\/\">said<\/a> \u201cshowed that McNeal had no violations in prison and he was basically a model prisoner.\u201d The information released to Gregory conflicted with testimony from McNeal\u2019s parole hearing that reportedly included statements from corrections officers about his transgressions behind bars.<\/p>\n<p>Gregory told KFI\u2019s \u201cJohn and Ken Show\u201d on Monday that he notified the D.A.\u2019s office of the discrepancy. He said prosecutors questioned whether Gov. Newsom had been given incorrect information &#8220;that showed he was a model prisoner when, in fact, he wasn\u2019t,\u201d Gregory said.<\/p>\n<p>D.A. Anderson <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iheart.com\/podcast\/john-and-ken-on-demand-20635765\/episode\/john-ken-show-hour-1-77016014\/\">told<\/a> Gregory over the weekend that he did not believe there was a cover-up or foul play involved but instead blamed the possible confusion on a governmental bureaucracy that leaves itself open to such errors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe guy was bounced around to six or seven institutions in the state over the last twenty years,\u201d Gregory <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iheart.com\/podcast\/john-and-ken-on-demand-20635765\/episode\/john-ken-show-hour-1-77016014\/\">explained<\/a> on Monday. \u201cIt\u2019s possible that those reports were never updated, and it\u2019s possible\u2026it simply fell through the cracks, the information wasn\u2019t updated in the system, it could be a whole host of things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt begs the question, how much other information is the governor getting that\u2019s not accurate,\u201d Gregory said.<\/p>\n<p><em>The Daily Wire is one of America\u2019s fastest-growing conservative media companies and counter-cultural outlets for news, opinion, and entertainment.
