Biden responded by saying: \u201cThat means whatever it takes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After Muir pressed further, the president replied:<\/p>\n<p><em>I don\u2019t think we may have to go that far. \u2026 [If] the only thing standing between getting voting rights legislation passed and not getting passed is the filibuster, I support making the exception of voting rights for the filibuster.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>During the presser, a reporter <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/press-briefings\/2021\/12\/23\/press-briefing-by-press-secretary-jen-psaki-december-23-2021\/\">asked Psaki<\/a> about the exchange.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m curious how the White House is going to deal with the slippery slope issue,\u201d the reporter said. \u201cWe obviously already sidestepped the filibuster for the debt ceiling.&nbsp;What is the president going to say to Democrats who say, \u2018If voting rights is important enough for a filibuster exception, you know, why not gun violence, why not climate change or immigration\u2019?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Psaki replied, saying that the president is \u201chappy to have that conversation with Democrats,\u201d and that such a conversation is expected in the next year. She continued, noting that Biden was asked \u201cabout voting rights specifically\u201d as it pertains to the filibuster, that he said \u201che doesn\u2019t think we\u2019ll have to go that far,\u201d but that he does support \u201cmaking the exception of voting rights for the filibuster.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I think the key piece we know at this point in time, which you know, is there aren\u2019t enough votes to change the Senate rules at this point in time.&nbsp;There are different ranges of options they\u2019re discussing in terms of rule changes, and we\u2019ll see where that ends up in January.<\/p>\n<p>The reporter asked again: \u201cSo is the president open to also having a filibuster exception for those other Democratic priorities I mentioned?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Psaki dodged, saying: \u201cI\u2019ll let the president speak for himself.&nbsp;He was asked a specific question, [and] I think he answered it pretty clearly.\u201d<\/p>\n[embedded content]\n<p>TRANSCRIPT:<\/p>\n<p><em>REPORTER: Yeah, I want to follow up on Alex\u2019s question on the filibuster.&nbsp;And I want to \u2014 I\u2019m curious how the White House is going to deal with the slippery slope issue.&nbsp;We obviously already sidestepped the filibuster for the debt ceiling.&nbsp;What is the president going to say to Democrats who say, \u201cIf voting rights is important enough for a filibuster exception, you know, why not gun violence, why not climate change or immigration\u201d?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>PSAKI: Well, he\u2019s happy to have that conversation with Democrats.&nbsp;And certainly, we expect that to be a part of the conversations that will be had in the year ahead.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The president was asked about voting rights specifically, on the filibuster specifically.
