This will help prevent further spread of COVID-19 and encourage a unified government response,\u201d Darby LaJoye, the acting TSA administrator, said in a statement. \u201cAs we continue to experience impacts from this pandemic, we are committed to this measure as the right thing to do for the TSA workforce, for our industry stakeholders, and for passengers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to the TSA\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsa.gov\/news\/press\/releases\/2021\/01\/31\/tsa-implement-executive-order-regarding-face-masks-airport-security\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">website<\/a>, face coverings are now required at\u00a0\u201cscreening checkpoints and throughout the commercial and public transportation system,\u201d adding that it came on the heels of Biden\u2019s national emergency declaration. (Kevin Lamarque\/Reuters)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The TSA added that the \u201cfederal face mask requirement extends to the nation\u2019s domestic network of airports\u201d and \u201cpassengers and crewmembers flying aboard airplanes operated by domestic and foreign air carriers with inbound flights to U.S. ports of entry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSurface transportation modes, such as passenger rail, bus systems, and over-the-road bus companies\u201d are included, the agency said, adding: \u201cPassengers without a mask may be denied entry, boarding, or continued transport. Failure to comply with the mask requirement can result in civil penalties.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Biden on Jan. 20 implemented a federal face-covering directive.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is the policy of my Administration to halt the spread of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) by relying on the best available data and science-based public health measures,\u201d Biden\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/presidential-actions\/2021\/01\/20\/executive-order-protecting-the-federal-workforce-and-requiring-mask-wearing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote<\/a>\u00a0at the time. \u201cSuch measures include wearing masks when around others, physical distancing, and other related precautions recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
