Scientists <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2021\/nov\/24\/scientists-warn-of-new-covid-variant-with-high-number-of-mutations\">discovered<\/a> omicron last month, first in Botswana on November 11 and then in South Africa on November 14. European governments later admitted they had evidence of omicron infections before African scientists publicized their findings. Scientists first&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.yalemedicine.org\/news\/5-things-to-know-delta-variant-covid\">detected<\/a> the Delta variant in India in December 2020.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>News that omicron causes 80 percent fewer hospitalizations than delta comes just four days after South Africa\u2019s Health Ministry <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/africa\/2021\/12\/17\/south-africa-omicron-caused-11-times-fewer-hospitalizations-than-delta\/\">revealed<\/a> that \u201celeven times fewer\u201d Chinese coronavirus patients \u2014 or just 1.7 percent \u2014 were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-10322099\/11-TIMES-fewer-Covid-patients-Omicron-ravaged-South-Africa-admitted-hospital.html\">hospitalized<\/a> for symptoms compared to the 19 percent of delta patients hospitalized during South Africa\u2019s equivalent summer wave of the delta strain.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnly 1.7 percent of identified Covid-19 [Chinese coronavirus] cases were admitted to hospital in the second week of infections in the fourth wave, compared with 19 percent in the same week of the third delta-driven wave,\u201d South African Health Minister Joe Phaahla told reporters at a press conference on December 17.<\/p>\n<p>Initial evidence out of South Africa indicates omicron causes milder illness than previous strains of the Chinese coronavirus, Waasila Jassat, a researcher for South Africa\u2019s NICD, said on December 17.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_19092554\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-19092554\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/virus-outbreak-south-africa-omicron-file-melva-mlambo-puseletso-lesofi-medical-scientists-prepare.jpg\" alt=\"The Associated Press\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1281\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">FILE \u2014 Melva Mlambo, right, and Puseletso Lesofi, both medical scientists prepare to sequence COVID-19 omicron samples at the Ndlovu Research Center in Elandsdoorn, South Africa, Dec. 8, 2021. (AP Photo\/Jerome Delay, File)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cWe have seen a decrease in a proportion of people who need to be on oxygen [sic],\u201d Jassat said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B3\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThey are at very low levels,\u201d she added, supporting the NICD\u2019s findings on December 21.<\/p>\n<p>Most of the data about omicron infections so far has come out of South Africa, where <a href=\"https:\/\/news.bloomberglaw.com\/health-law-and-business\/j-j-shot-shows-no-neutralization-against-omicron-in-lab-study\">Johnson &amp; Johnson<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fdanews.com\/articles\/205839-astrazenecas-covid-19-vaccine-offers-no-protective-effect-against-omicron?v=preview\">AstraZeneca<\/a> coronavirus vaccines are predominantly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/africa\/2021\/12\/13\/fully-vaccinated-south-african-president-tests-positive-coronavirus\/\">used<\/a>.
