State Democratic lawmakers approved a map over Republican objections that solidifies Democratic control of seven of the state\u2019s eight Congressional districts, and makes the single Republican district <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/12\/10\/two-house-republicans-face-potential-defeat-under-redrawn-maps-maryland-new-mexico\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">more competitive<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Hogan ripped the \u201cdisgracefully illegal gerrymandered maps\u201d after Democratic legislators overrode his Dec. 8 veto, then called on Attorney General Merrick Garland to sue the state for civil-rights violations. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/5vmOtstBky\">https:\/\/t.co\/5vmOtstBky<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 The Washington Times (@WashTimes) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/WashTimes\/status\/1474018235020414982?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">December 23, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cThe Maryland General Assembly created these illegal maps in dark backrooms and now they will be forced to defend them in a court of law,\u201d Fair Maps Maryland spokesman <a href=\"https:\/\/fairmapsmd.org\/news\/2021\/12\/fair-maps-maryland-announces-lawsuit-challenging-congressional-districts-based-on-extreme-partisan-gerrymandering\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Doug Mayer said<\/a>. \u201cThese Marylanders are victims of electoral corruption and blatant voter suppression, and this lawsuit is their only remedy to undo the damage the General Assembly has perpetuated against them for decades.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Republican Gov. <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/12\/06\/larry-hogan-gerrymandering-maryland-democrats-an-america-united\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Larry Hogan<\/a> created an independent commission which drew more balanced maps, <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/11\/16\/larry-hogan-maryland-redistricting-congressional-maps-commission\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">according to independent expert analyses<\/a>, but the legislature opted instead to vote for the gerrymandered maps granting Democrats an advantage.<\/p>\n<p>Former President Donald Trump won 32% of the vote in Maryland in 2020, and Hogan won 55% of the vote when he won re-election in 2018. Still, the state only has one Republican member of Congress and would be at risk of having zero under the newly approved map. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/12\/14\/karl-aro-maryland-redistricting-congressional-maps-2022\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: Official Behind Gerrymandered Democrat Maps Was Previously Accused Of Discrimination Against Black Staffers)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/merrick-garland-please-sue-my-state-maryland-larry-hogan-texas-gerrymandering-voting-rights-11639757168\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Hogan has called<\/a> for federal intervention from the Department of Justice (DOJ) and Attorney General Merrick Garland, who is <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/12\/06\/department-of-justice-texas-lawsuit-redistricting-merrick-garland\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">suing the state of Texas<\/a> over its newly-proposed Congressional maps for 2022.
