[The protagonist has a relationship with a much younger woman.] Did you find this difficult in the current environment?&#8221; asked The Guardian.<\/p>\n<p class=\"subheading\">&#8220;Our sexual identity and the relationship we have through it, to ourselves and to others, is defining in our lives. And in the light of cancel culture and shaming \u2013 while a lot of this moment is very helpful \u2013 it\u2019s a difficult time to say: &#8216;I want to be open about the idiosyncrasies of human sexuality,&#8217;&#8221; he said. &#8220;What\u2019s that great Mark Twain line? &#8216;The aim of art is to alleviate shame.&#8217; We\u2019re in this period now when you can\u2019t even write about bad behaviour because it might seem like you\u2019re condoning it. You have to be able to create a character who does things they wish they didn\u2019t do. I went back and forth on it, because it\u2019s just a petrifying time to speak about male sexuality. If you can\u2019t shine a light into dark corners, the demons that live there will never go away.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Ethan Hawke&#8217;s condemnation of cancel culture follows &#8220;Breaking Bad&#8221; actor Bryan Cranston, who lamented that such a culture kills forgiveness.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe live in this \u2018cancel culture\u2019 of people erring and doing wrong \u2014 either on purpose or by accident \u2014 and there\u2019s less forgiveness in our world,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p data-slot-rendered-dynamic=\"true\">\u201cI think we\u2019re unfortunately in a coarser environment. I think our societies have become harder and less understanding, less tolerant, less forgiving,\u201d he added. \u201cWhere does forgiveness live in our society? Where can we accept someone\u2019s behavior if they are contrite, if they are apologetic and take responsibility? Isn\u2019t it possible that forgiveness plays a part of that and they are welcomed back in, as opposed to creating more fences, creating more, \u2018you\u2019re out, you\u2019re in, that\u2019s it.\u2019 You make one mistake, gone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-slot-rendered-dynamic=\"true\">Cranston felt that society needed to \u201ctake a second look\u201d at the concept of ostracizing people, extolling the concept of mercy and forgiveness as a human strength.<\/p>\n<p data-slot-rendered-dynamic=\"true\">\u201cI think we need to take a second look at that, exhale, and realize that asking forgiveness and receiving forgiveness are not weaknesses, but are human strengths,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>In early January, actor Rowan Atkinson, forever known as Mr. Bean, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/rowan-atkinson-star-of-mr-bean-condemns-cancel-culture-a-medieval-mob-looking-for-someone-to-burn\">likened cancel culture<\/a>\u00a0to the \u201cdigital equivalent of the medieval mob roaming the streets looking for someone to burn.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe problem we have online is that an algorithm decides what we want to see, which ends up creating a simplistic, binary view of society,\u201d Atkinson told the U.K. Radio Times. \u201cIt becomes a case of either you\u2019re with us or against us.
