Ted Cruz (R-TX) facing off against former President Donald Trump for the top slot.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking with&nbsp;the Truth Gazette, Cruz <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Truth_Gazette\/status\/1473664240959565824?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> he has \u201cabsolutely\u201d been considering a 2024 run, noting that the runner-up from the last round often gets the nomination.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cYou know, I ran in 2016. It was the most fun I\u2019ve ever had in my life. We had a very crowded field. We had 17 candidates in the race \u2014 a very strong field. And I ended up placing second\u201d Cruz said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a reason historically that the runner-up is almost always the next nominee,\u201d Cruz continued. \u201cAnd that\u2019s been true going back to Nixon or Reagan or McCain or Romney that has played out repeatedly. You come in with just an enormous base of support.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, the one wild card that could knock Cruz\u2019s 2nd place momentum off is if former President Trump throws his hat in the ring for a potential rematch against the increasingly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2021\/12\/21\/pbs-poll-biden-approval-rating-lower-hispanics-whites\/\">unpopular<\/a> President Joe Biden. (Photo by Ethan Miller\/Getty Images)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>During an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2021\/12\/11\/former-president-donald-trump-us-much-weaker-now-under-joe-biden-not-respected-anymore\/\">interview <\/a>with Breitbart News in early December, the president said that people will be \u201cextremely happy\u201d with his 2024 decision:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>I know you well, and Breitbart is terrific, and we have to stop them from doing what they\u2019re doing with your advertisers, and all of these people play tough. They are a disgrace to our nation. But I\u2019ll tell you what: I\u2019ve known you and Breitbart right from the beginning, and you\u2019ve been fantastic. I really believe you will be extremely happy.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>While Trump and Cruz had a contentious battle over the nomination in 2016, with Cruz famously&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/story\/2016\/07\/rnc-2016-donald-trump-unity-225915\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">refusing<\/a>&nbsp;his endorsement at the Republican National Convention \u2014 the warring pair eventually cozied up to each other as the president\u2019s tenure matured. Cruz, for instance, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cruz.senate.gov\/newsroom\/press-releases\/joint-statement-from-senators-cruz-johnson-lankford-daines-kennedy-blackburn-braun-senators-elect-lummis-marshall-hagerty-tuberville\">signed<\/a> a letter ahead of the 2020 election certification calling for an elector commission to investigate claims of election fraud.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn January 6, it is incumbent on Congress to vote on whether to certify the 2020 election results. That vote is the lone constitutional power remaining to consider and force resolution of the multiple allegations of serious voter fraud,\u201d the letter said.<\/p>\n<p>As of now, former President Trump<a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2021\/12\/20\/poll-trump-dominates-2024-gop-field-with-60-support\/\"> dominates<\/a> the field of potential 2024 GOP candidates with 60 percent of likely Republican voters in support of him running again. Ted Cruz trails in fourth place behind Florida Gov.
