The natural disaster effectively cut Vancouver off from the rest of the province for weeks. The development has had lasting effects on the city\u2019s port, which is North America\u2019s third-largest trade hub.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEver since [the November floods], the two major freight railways \u2014 Canadian National and Canadian Pacific \u2014 that carry about two-thirds of the cargo that\u2019s transported by land to the Port of Vancouver have fixed the lines and are working to keep them open,\u201d Bloomberg <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/newsletters\/2021-12-07\/supply-chain-latest-vancouver-port-emerges-from-flood-crisis-slowly\">reported<\/a> on December 7.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re running again, albeit slowly,\u201d the news site acknowledged.<\/p>\n<p>Japan was the number one overseas market for U.S. potatoes in 2020, according to a May 2021 <a href=\"https:\/\/apps.fas.usda.gov\/newgainapi\/api\/Report\/DownloadReportByFileName?fileName=USJTA%20Treatment%20for%20Potatoes%20and%20Potato%20Products%202021_Tokyo_Japan_04-18-2021.pdf\">report<\/a> by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn 2020, the United States exported over $342 million of potatoes and potato products to Japan,\u201d according to the U.S. government agency.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJapan is a major importer of cooked and prepared frozen potatoes,\u201d the report noted, adding, \u201cU.S. potato products accounted for nearly 70 percent of Japan\u2019s total potato product imports.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>McDonald\u2019s Japan previously dealt with a potato shortage in December 2014, when it was also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-mcdonalds-japan-fries-idUSKBN0JU04320141216\">forced<\/a> to sell only \u201csmall-sized\u201d french fries to customers.
