The official number for 2020 is 25,000 more than a provisional count estimated earlier in the year. The gap between the provisional count and actual death count is explained by some states switching to electronic reporting systems, which caused a lag in death records.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<p>Deaths from the coronavirus contributed to 2020 becoming the nation\u2019s most lethal year. Coronavirus deaths quickly became the country\u2019s third leading cause of death, behind heart disease and cancer.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>Robert Anderson, the CDC\u2019s death statistics overseer,&nbsp;<a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/coronavirus-pandemic-science-health-pandemics-covid-19-pandemic-8117abd8e4367eaa6cb9b7ae78875734\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">estimates<\/a>&nbsp;2021 will surpass 2020\u2019s death count by at least 15,000 individuals.<\/p>\n<p>According to an AP Report, \u201cAnderson said it\u2019s likely that the nation will see more than 3.4 million deaths in 2021.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, the estimated increase in deaths this year is not because of deaths from the coronavirus. Instead, for the first time in the nation\u2019s history, deaths from drug overdoses are&nbsp;<a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/coronavirus-pandemic-science-health-pandemics-covid-19-pandemic-8117abd8e4367eaa6cb9b7ae78875734\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">expected<\/a>&nbsp;to surpass 100,000 in 2021.<\/p>\n<p>The CDC hoped coronavirus vaccines would decrease the death count, but approximately 35 percent of the eligible U.S. population is unvaccinated.<\/p>\n<p>The CDC also revised its estimated life expectancy for 2020. Initially, life expectancy was estimated to decrease by 1.5 years from 2019.
