BROWN\/AFP via Getty Images)<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Morales explained, describing the Holy Family as \u201cmarginalized\u201d:<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<blockquote>\n<p>This idea for the Nativity scene was born out of wanting it to be a prophetic message about our faith and how we act and live it out in the world. Christmas is not just the story of the birth of Jesus. This is not just a time when we feel all calm and peaceful and give each other nice presents. The story of Christmas is a deep and challenging story of a marginalized family that fled their home to go to Egypt. We tend to ignore the really challenging parts of the Christmas story.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Each Christmas, the church <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailybulletin.com\/2021\/12\/15\/claremont-church-makes-statement-about-climate-with-nativity-scene\/\">uses<\/a> its Nativity scene to signal its views on various social justice issues, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailybulletin.com\/2020\/12\/11\/claremont-church-honors-black-lives-matter-protests-with-nativity-scene\/\">Black Lives Matter<\/a> last year, and, in 2019, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailybulletin.com\/2019\/12\/09\/claremont-church-nativity-depicts-holy-family-as-caged-refugees\/\">depicting<\/a> the Holy Family as caged illegal migrants.<\/p>\n<p>Morales, however, said the goal of the church\u2019s display is not political, but educational.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_19223978\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/media.breitbart.com\/media\/2021\/12\/GettyImages-1187444292.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-19223978\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/GettyImages-1187444292-1024x683-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"990\" height=\"660\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>A man expresses disapproval at a Christmas nativity scene that depicts Jesus, Mary, and Joseph separated and caged, as if asylum seekers detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, at Claremont United Methodist Church in 2019.(David McNew\/Getty Images)<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cOur hope is that it will be a prophetic message,\u201d she said, the <em>Daily Bulletin<\/em> noted. \u201cThe purpose is to remind everyone that if we\u2019re not responding to our neighbors with justice and mercy, then we\u2019re not responding to the call of Christmas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The church\u2019s website <a href=\"https:\/\/claremontumc.org\/who-we-are\/\">features<\/a> a \u201creconciling statement\u201d that says:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>As faithful disciples of Jesus and his teachings, we advocate for the full inclusion and acceptance of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender persons and their families in the church and community.<\/p>\n<p>As a congregation, we commit to welcoming and being led by clergy of any gender or orientation. We offer all the pastoral and congregational care of our church to all people.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cThis includes continuing to offer the sacraments of baptism and holy communion; and this explicitly includes our sacred rituals, including marriage by our clergy and in our church building,\u201d the statement reads.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Claremont United Methodist Church in California is using the birth of Jesus this year to showcase its climate change agenda.
