(MAHMUD TURKIA\/AFP\/Getty Images)<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span>Haftar held a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.libyanexpress.com\/bashagha-and-maiteeq-meet-haftar-for-talks\/\"><span>meeting<\/span><\/a><span> with several high-ranking former government officials at his stronghold in Benghazi on Tuesday, ostensibly to work up a plan for saving the election and reinforcing \u201cnational unity,\u201d although skeptics wondered if Haftar was actually planning another coup attempt, or preparing to break away from Tripoli with the eastern parliament that supports him.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B3\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p><span>\u201cTen years on from a popular uprising that demanded freedoms and rights, the front-runners of this national election are all Gadhafi-era politicians,\u201d Sami Hamdi, managing director of the London-based International Interest global intelligence firm, sighed to DW in a telephone interview.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The U.N.
