In a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c-span.org\/video\/?516667-1\/airline-ceos-testify-senate-oversight-hearing\">Senate hearing<\/a>, Southwest CEO Gary Kelly informed Congress that the industry\u2019s top concern in the short-term \u201cis the deployment of 5G.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn November, Verizon and AT&amp;T wrote to the Federal Communications Commission confirming their intention to start deploying 5G in January 2022,\u201d reported <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/science\/2021\/dec\/21\/airbus-and-boeing-express-concerns-over-5g-interference-in-us\">The Guardian<\/a>. \u201cBut they said they would take extra precautionary measures beyond what is required by US law until July 2022 while the FAA completed its investigation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On December 7, the FAA announced that potential radio altimeter interference would require the prohibition of pilots from relying on such technology when they approach specific airports.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf bad weather means pilots can\u2019t see a runway near those cell sites after AT&amp;T and Verizon light up C-Band frequencies Jan. 5, expect them to land elsewhere. Or not take off at all,\u201d explained <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/tech\/2021\/12\/21\/5-g-phones-airplanes-flight-delays-faa\/8947513002\/\">USA Today<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019ll be forced to divert the flight to an airport that is not 5G-covered,\u201d said Robert Mann, president of the aviation-industry consulting firm R.W. Mann. &amp; Co. \u201cOr you\u2019ll have to not dispatch the plane.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf there\u2019s any kind of weather, if there\u2019s high winds, if the visibility isn\u2019t good because of smog, you can\u2019t use that equipment,\u201d United Airlines Chief Executive Scott Kirby <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/airlines-brace-for-flight-restrictions-in-5g-standoff-11639929603\">said<\/a>. \u201cYou can\u2019t land at airports \u2014 at Chicago O\u2019Hare, at Atlanta, at Detroit \u2014 just think about what that means.
