He can either take a red pill and wake up to reality, or can take a blue pill and continue living in ignorance. Fans of the film cheered when the protagonist chose the more difficult, honest road to discovering truth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou take the blue pill, the story ends. You wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe,\u201d Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne) tells Neo in the movie. \u201cYou take the red pill, you stay in wonderland and I show you how deep the rabbit hole goes \u2026 remember, all I\u2019m offering is the truth, nothing more.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Decades have passed since that surprise hit came to the big screen, and over time the meaning of the red pill has become a cultural phenomenon. In some circles, \u201ctaking the red pill\u201d has become synonymous with defecting to the conservative movement, ostensibly pulling back the curtain and rejecting the lies of the ruling elite.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>But \u201cMatrix\u201d creators never intended Neo\u2019s red pill moment to have any political connotations whatsoever. And if anything, the Wachowski siblings would have cast Neo as a liberal vigilante to better match their own belief system.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>And the movie directors have been vocal in their disgust at the red pill movement being equated to conservative conversions. In May 2020, Elon Musk cryptically tweeted, \u201cTake the red pill.\u201d Ivanka Trump quickly replied, \u201cTaken!\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/elon-musk-take-the-red-pill\">This exchange<\/a> was enough for Lilly Wachowski to add a, \u201cF*** both of you,\u201d to the conversation.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A 2017 opinion piece in Fox News described the growing movement, saying mainstream media ignored the increasing number of individuals switching political parties.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe mainstream media failed to see the rise of Donald Trump in 2016,\u201d the article said. \u201cNow it\u2019s overlooking another grassroots movement that may soon be of equal significance\u2014 the growing number of liberals \u2018taking the red pill.\u2019&nbsp; People of all ages and ethnicities are posting YouTube videos describing \u2018red pill moments\u2019\u2014personal awakenings that have caused them to reject leftist narratives imbibed since childhood from friends, teachers, and the news and entertainment media.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But the Wachowskis became desperate to reclaim the meaning of the red and blue pills. In a 2020 interview with Netflix Film Club, Lilly Wachowski, who came out as trans in 2016, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/arts-entertainment\/films\/features\/matrix-red-pill-trans-b1917658.html\">claimed<\/a> that \u201cThe Matrix\u201d was truly an allegory for the trans experience.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m glad that it has gotten out that that was the original intention,\u201d Wachowski <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=adXm2sDzGkQ\">said<\/a> of that fan theory. \u201cThe world wasn\u2019t quite ready, at a corporate level \u2026 the corporate world wasn\u2019t ready for it.\u201d The argument was made that since some hormone therapy pills are red, transitioning is the true meaning of taking the red pill.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Instead of distancing the \u201cMatrix\u201d franchise from red-pilling, film execs leaned into the symbolism in an attempt to reclaim the narrative. Advertising for the new film \u201cThe Matrix: Resurrections\u201d included red and blue pill imagery galore.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Independent discussed the issue, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/arts-entertainment\/films\/features\/matrix-red-pill-trans-b1917658.html\">saying<\/a> \u201cThe fact that the red pill\/blue pill dichotomy is so prominent in the new film\u2019s advertising, though, does suggest she\u2019d like to reclaim them \u2013 symbols not of right-wing nonsense, but of positive change.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Daily Wire is one of America\u2019s fastest-growing conservative media companies and counter-cultural outlets for news, opinion, and entertainment.
