David Gregory (R-St. Louis) said, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/fox2now.com\/news\/missouri\/lawmakers-want-to-ban-critical-race-theory-in-missouri-schools\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fox 2 News<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are so many parents who have come to me very upset, very concerned that their kids are being taught that they are the oppressor simply because of the color of their skin or the way they were born,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Missouri state House Speaker Pro Tem John Wiemann (R) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.midriversnewsmagazine.com\/news\/local-politicians-pre-file-state-legislation-aimed-at-education-reform\/article_a9d326b2-5ea3-11ec-95a1-6b6d0930c84a.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pre-filed<\/a> the legislation regarding a ban on critical race theory earlier in December.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">The bill, <a href=\"https:\/\/fastdemocracy.com\/bill-search\/mo\/2022\/bills\/MOB00016311\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">HB 1835<\/a>, intends to \u201censure children are being taught appropriate subject matter in the classroom, and \u2026 give parents access to the instructional material being taught to their kids.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">\u201cParents around the state are very concerned about some of the subject matter that has shown up in our classrooms, such as critical race theory,\u201d Wiemann said. \u201cIt\u2019s important that we give our kids a complete picture of our nation\u2019s history, but also that we provide this information in a way that is accurate and unbiased. Parents should not have to worry that their kids are being exposed to hateful, racist ideologies when they send them to school.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If passed, the ban would add to a growing number of states with laws or executive orders against the controversial view. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brookings.edu\/blog\/fixgov\/2021\/07\/02\/why-are-states-banning-critical-race-theory\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nine states<\/a> had passed laws by November, including Idaho, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas, Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina, Arizona, and North Dakota.<\/p>\n<p>The Daily Wire <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/missouri-school-district-shells-out-15000-on-crt-professor-to-conduct-history-curriculum-audit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a> in July regarding $15,000 paid for the creation of a controversial curriculum in one Missouri school district.<\/p>\n<p><em>Francis Howell School District in St. Charles County, Missouri, hired Dr. LaGarrett King in September 2020 for his \u201cprofessional development and consultation services.\u201d King is an associate professor of social education at the University of Missouri and the director of the university\u2019s Carter Center for K-12 Black History Education.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>According to a&nbsp;contract&nbsp;obtained by a concerned parents group, King was paid $15,000 for a slew of online and in-person consulting services and curriculum developments. He was specifically tasked with assisting a team of high school teachers to create an African American history course.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cDr. King will provide training, professional development, curriculum audit, and support to our leadership team as we develop and design this course during the 2020-21 school year,\u201d the contract reads.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The school district\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fhsdschools.org\/cms\/one.aspx?portalId=995782&amp;pageId=48907816\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">website<\/a> claims the courses do not promote critical race theory.<\/p>\n<p>Students had been advocating for these courses for a number of years \u2013 long before \u201cCRT\u201d (which will be addressed in the next section) was a buzzword. The courses offer a necessary step toward cultural inclusion in our school communities \u2013 providing an opportunity for all students to see themselves represented in the curriculum and allowing students of all races to learn about the Black experience in America.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/campus\/missouri-school-district-spends-15k-on-critical-race-theory-audit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Washington Free Beacon<\/a> found that King also conducted a virtual seminar for teachers as part of his contract. The report stated:<\/p>\n<p>Educators should teach history through a \u201csocial justice lens\u201d regardless of parents\u2019 or community concern, King said.
