The film industry is rife with sequels, prequels, and reboots, with very little emphasis on original ideas. And unfortunately, this leads to lackluster movie releases.<\/p>\n<p>Despite this pervasive problem, audiences had high hopes for \u201cThe Matrix: Resurrections.\u201d The fourth installment of the franchise releases soon after 18 years since the last movie. Plus, \u201cThe Matrix\u201d has taken on a cult following with diehard fans eager for more content.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>But now that momentum may come to a screeching halt. Early critic reviews for \u201cThe Matrix: Resurrections\u201d are quite terrible. Reviewers describe the fourth movie in the franchise as being, \u201canother truly horrible sequel.\u201d Even fan-favorite lead Keanu Reeves isn\u2019t enough to save this movie.&nbsp;<\/p>\n[embedded content]\n<p>The Daily Beast <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/the-matrix-resurrections-is-even-sillier-than-mark-zuckerbergs-metaverse\">called<\/a> \u201cResurrections,\u201d \u201csillier than Zuckerberg\u2019s Metaverse.\u201d Reviewer Nick Schager wrote, \u201cDevoid of its trademark style, action and depth, it\u2019s a pointless follow-up that falls back on cheeky self-referentiality in order to justify its existence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>IGN reviewer Amelia Emberwing had a similar take. She <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ign.com\/articles\/the-matrix-resurrections-review\">wrote<\/a>, \u201c\u2018The Matrix Resurrections\u2019 is the kind of film that will go down in cult history because it is so laughably bad. Truthfully, I can\u2019t even say it\u2019s unenjoyable because I spent so much of its overly long runtime giggling over how jaw-droppingly misguided the majority of it is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Times blasted how it ruined the legacy of \u201cThe Matrix.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAn ingenious, inventive and era-defining sci-fi movie from 1999 has now, with this latest and long-awaited misfire, produced yet another truly horrible sequel,\u201d Kevin Maher <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.co.uk\/article\/the-matrix-resurrections-review-another-truly-horrible-sequel-drx8cqp8h\">wrote<\/a>. \u201cThe Matrix Resurrections\u2019 doesn\u2019t even have the excuse of narrative exigency to hide behind. There is literally no reason for it to exist.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The new storyline follows Neo (Reeves), Trinity, (Carrie-Anne Moss) and Morpheus (originally Laurence Fishburne but now replaced by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) as they try to save humanity from an Artificial Intelligence system that\u2019s holding them hostage.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The popular phrase \u201ctaking the red pill\u201d comes from \u201cThe Matrix,\u201d though the ultra-liberal Wachowskis balk at the insinuation that the movie has anything to do with defecting to conservatism. In a 2020 interview, co-creator Lilly Wachowski <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/matrix-creator-red-pill-trans-allegory-mens-rights-activists-1523669\">insisted<\/a> that \u201cThe Matrix\u201d is actually \u201ca trans allegory.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>What was seen as edgy and original in 1999 is now a tired concept for fans and critics. It\u2019s worth noting that this film is Lana Wachowski\u2019s first solo effort at \u201cThe Matrix\u201d franchise. The original \u201cMatrix\u201d films had the Wachowski siblings working together.<\/p>\n<p>But not every reviewer has despised \u201cThe Matrix: Resurrections.\u201d Randy Myers of San Jose Mercury News <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mercurynews.com\/2021\/12\/21\/new-movies-the-truth-about-matrix-resurrections-its-a-love-story\/\">said<\/a>, \u201c\u2019Resurrections\u2019 can\u2019t compare to the original film, but it is a lot of fun.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, David Sims of The Atlantic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/culture\/archive\/2021\/12\/the-matrix-resurrections-movie-review\/621082\/\">claimed<\/a> the film had enough nostalgic elements to make it worthwhile.
