In a statement to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/biden-extend-student-loan-debt-payment-pause-restart-date-2021-12\">Insider<\/a>, an Education Department spokesperson said that a decision on whether to continue the freeze will be announced later this week.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cSince Day One of the Biden Administration, we\u2019ve been hard at work delivering meaningful relief to student loan borrowers,\u201d the spokesperson said.&nbsp; That started with an extension of the pause on federal student loan repayment&nbsp;<u>until January 31, 2022<\/u>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo date, the pause has saved 41 million borrowers tens of billions of dollars.&nbsp;Later this week, we will be announcing whether to extend the pause further,\u201d the statement added.<\/p>\n<p>The White House mulling the freeze comes after <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/policy\/finance\/586224-pressure-builds-on-biden-ahead-of-student-loan-cliff\">progressives put<\/a> considerable pressure on the administration after Jen Psaki said in early December that \u201ca smooth transition back into repayment is a high priority\u201d for the president.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThis is going to be a hard blow to people who have struggled throughout this pandemic. It\u2019s the wrong move,\u201d Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/policy\/finance\/586224-pressure-builds-on-biden-ahead-of-student-loan-cliff\">said<\/a> last week.<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, as news spread of Biden\u2019s reconsideration, Elizabeth Warren tweeted: \u201c<span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-poiln3 r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\">Restarting student loan debt payments would take more than $85 billion dollars out of our economy next year.
