NBC &#8220;Nightly News&#8221; spent all of 86 seconds on it.<\/p>\n<p>ABC&#8217;s &#8220;World News Tonight&#8221; and &#8220;Good Morning America&#8221; did not cover the story at all.<\/p>\n<p>During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, Cuomo sent \u201crecovering COVID-19 patients from hospitals into nursing homes,\u201d where the disease ravaged elderly populations and possibly led to as many as 11,000 fatalities, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/212ccd87924b6906053703a00514647f\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">an investigation<\/a> by The Associated Press. Despite taking flak for the decision, many in the media have lauded Cuomo for his leadership, and he even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/gov-andrew-cuomo-wins-international-emmy-for-covid-19-press-briefings\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">won an Emmy<\/a> for his daily COVID-19 press briefings.<\/p>\n<p>During his press briefing Friday, Cuomo was dismissive of the nursing home deaths.\u00a0&#8220;Look, whether a person died in a hospital or died in a nursing home, it\u2019s\u2014the people died,&#8221; Cuomo said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Who cares?&#8221; Cuomo later asked. &#8220;33 [percent],\u00a028 [percent],\u00a0died in a hospital, died in a nursing home. They died!\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/VECpQNKF2I\">pic.twitter.com\/VECpQNKF2I<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Tom Elliott (@tomselliott) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/tomselliott\/status\/1355211151429279754?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 29, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>In a Friday\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2021\/01\/29\/andrew-cuomos-bad-who-cares-answer-coronavirus-nursing-home-data\/?utm_source=twitter&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_campaign=wp_politics\">article<\/a>\u00a0titled, &#8220;Andrew Cuomo\u2019s bad \u2018who cares\u2019 answer on coronavirus nursing-home data,&#8221; a writer for\u00a0The Washington Post went after Cuomo for his comments.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;From public policy perspective, though, we should care,&#8221; wrote Aaron Blake, the paper&#8217;s senior political reporter.\u00a0&#8220;A death is indeed a death, but there are major and very valid questions about whether nursing-home policies led to unnecessary ones. To the extent more deaths occurred in or came from that setting, it allows us to evaluate how significant that problem was and how much corrective action is needed. Cuomo has to know that.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>As The Daily Wire <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/cuomo-de-blasio-nyc-indoor-dining\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">wrote<\/a>\u00a0regarding the recent report about nursing home deaths:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>New York\u2019s death toll from coronavirus-related nursing home deaths may be much higher than what was reported by the state, especially in the months after Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D-NY) issued a mandate requiring facilities to accept COVID-positive patients regardless of whether those facilities were equipped to handle them.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>A <a href=\"https:\/\/ag.ny.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/2021-nursinghomesreport.pdf\">report<\/a> from New York Attorney General Letitia James has determined that \u201cCOVID-19 resident deaths associated with nursing homes in New York state appear to be undercounted by DOH by approximately 50 percent.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>That 50% refers to a narrow slice of data \u2013 information from 62 hand-selected nursing home facilities and from a time period of just a couple months last spring and summer. As James\u2019 office stated, from \u201cMarch through August 3, [New York State Department of Health] DOH reported a total of 6,423 resident deaths in nursing homes due to COVID-19, including 3,640 confirmed COVID-19 deaths and 2,783 presumed7 COVID-19 deaths.\u201d The data came from New York\u2019s 619 nursing homes, which reported the deaths to DOH.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The report places most of the blame for the deaths on low-rated nursing homes, which received the same mandate as higher-rated ones even though they were ill-equipped to properly separate and care for COVID-positive patients.
