Garg is currently taking a leave of absence while an outside investigator looks into the matter.<\/p>\n<p>It now looks like Garg tried to ensure the fired employees only received one week of severance pay following his sudden announcement, Business Insider <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/better-ceo-vishal-garg-laid-off-employees-one-week-severance-2021-12\">reported<\/a>. Two people with direct knowledge of the meetings told the outlet that Garg tried to make sure the fired employees only received one or two weeks of severance pay even though the company gave no indication the firings were coming.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe people \u2014 current and former employees \u2014 also told Insider that other executives pushed for periods of two months or 10 weeks, and that several even walked out of the discussion over the small size of Garg\u2019s proposed package,\u201d the outlet reported. \u201cGarg relented somewhat, offering employees four weeks of severance at the time of the layoffs, but that number was later&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/better-ups-severance-for-laid-off-workers-as-class-action-lawsuits-loom-2021-12\">increased to 60 days<\/a>&nbsp;after lawyers threatened to sue the company for violating US law concerning advance notice for \u2018mass layoffs.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne of the sources told Insider that Garg was aware that his actions potentially violated the WARN Act, which requires 60 days\u2019 notice or pay before conducting large-scale layoffs,\u201d the outlet continued.<\/p>\n<p>The Daily Wire <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/mortgage-company-ceo-fires-900-employees-via-zoom-including-diversity-hiring-team\">reported<\/a> earlier this month that Garg called a Zoom meeting to fire the employees.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you\u2019re on this call, you are part of the unlucky group that is being laid off,\u201d Garg said during the meeting. \u201cYour employment here is terminated effective immediately.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He also told the employees that they would be receiving an email from the human resources department detailing their benefits and severance.<\/p>\n<p>Garg then told the people on the call that market efficiency, performance, and productivity were the reasons they were being fired. Fortune&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2021\/12\/03\/better-com-ceo-attacks-laid-off-employees-blind-message-board\/\">reported<\/a>&nbsp;that days after the firing, Garg \u201cposted a series of messages seen by&nbsp;<em>Fortune&nbsp;<\/em>on an anonymous professional network,\u201d in which he accused the fired employees of \u201cstealing\u201d from coworkers and customers due to their unproductivity.
