Ted Cruz said on Monday that he has invited West Virginia Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin to join the GOP, saying \u201cone of the two parties actually likes you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cruz shared the comments during a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/media\/ted-cruz-joe-manchin-build-back-better\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fox News<\/a> interview on Monday at Turning Point USA\u2019s AmericaFest in Phoenix, Arizona.<\/p>\n<p>The Texas senator said he recently told Manchin, \u201cLook, one of the two parties actually likes you,\u201d according to the interview.<\/p>\n<p>When asked about the possibility of Manchin switching from a Democrat to the Republican Party, Cruz offered an interesting response.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA lot of folks ask, \u2018Well, gosh, is Manchin going to become a Republican? I hope he does. I\u2019ve asked him to. I think every Republican senator has made that case a dozen times to Joe,\u201d Cruz said. The interview added:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI will say I think it\u2019s a tough hill for him to climb. He\u2019s just culturally- he\u2019s a Democrat. He\u2019s been a Democrat his whole life and he\u2019s really the godfather of Democrats in West Virginia. So I get why switching parties, that\u2019s hard. That being said, if they\u2019re nasty enough, the best thing that could happen is they could drive him over to the Republican Party and we would welcome him.\u201d&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Cruz\u2019s words add to those of Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) who said last week, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/senate\/586276-mcconnell-it-would-be-a-great-idea-for-manchin-to-switch-parties\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Hill<\/a>, \u201cIt would not surprise you to know that I\u2019ve suggested for years it would be a great idea, representing a deep-red state like West Virginia, for him to come over to our side.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>McConnell did not expect Manchin to actually follow through on the party change, however.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t think that\u2019s going to happen,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>In November, Utah Republican Sen. Mike Lee also encouraged Manchin to join his party.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is still plenty of time. He could still switch parties if he wanted to. I encourage him to do so,\u201d Lee said during a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/media\/mike-lee-encourages-joe-manchin-to-switch-parties\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fox News<\/a> interview.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s no reason why he belongs with the party of inflation, why he belongs with the party of lawlessness, why he opted to remain with the party that\u2019s harassing him and intimidating him and belittling him at every turn just so they can fundamentally remake the American economy and American society. Joe Manchin absolutely should leave the Democratic party and I look forward to embracing him when he joins our caucus,\u201d the senator added.<\/p>\n<p>In October, the liberal publication <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motherjones.com\/politics\/2021\/10\/senator-joe-manchin-democratic-party-exit-plan-biden-infrastructure-deal-exclusive\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mother Jones<\/a> shared an exclusive report that claimed Manchin has offered to leave the Democrats, not to join Republicans, but to become an Independent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe told associates that he has a two-step plan for exiting the party. First, he would send a letter to Sen. Chuck Schumer, the top Senate Democrat, removing himself from the Democratic leadership of the Senate. (He is vice chairman of the Senate Democrats\u2019 policy and communications committee.) Manchin hopes that would send a signal. He would then wait and see if that move had any impact on the negotiations.
