And while Democratic Reps. <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/12\/16\/california-democratic-rep-alan-lowenthal-announces-retirement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alan Lowenthal<\/a> and Lucille Roybal-Allard\u2019s districts were merged to accommodate California losing a House seat, both are retiring in 2022.<\/p>\n<p>The new map also increases the political power of California\u2019s sizeable Latino population, which has driven much of the state\u2019s growth over the past decade. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Redistrict\/status\/1472965510748950534\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Eighteen districts<\/a> would be majority Latino under the new map, up from 13 now.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" readability=\"13.198324022346\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">NEW: California\u2019s near-final draft map looks terrific for Dems. All 42 Dem incumbents (except retiring Rep. Alan Lowenthal (D), whose Long Beach seat is folded in w\/ LA Rep. Lucille Roybal-Allard (D)\u2019s), get strong seats.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, *five* of 11 GOP seats get more vulnerable. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/EUAtN2SRsI\">pic.twitter.com\/EUAtN2SRsI<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Dave Wasserman (@Redistrict) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Redistrict\/status\/1472957123449569290?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">December 20, 2021<\/a> <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Republicans criticized the map drawn by five Democrats, five Republicans and four Independents and approved unanimously, arguing that the improved Democratic circumstances showed political bias. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/11\/04\/north-carolina-adopts-new-congressional-map-that-bolsters-republicans\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: North Carolina Adopts New Congressional Map That Bolsters Republicans)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe commission has shown they were not acting independently when they drew all of the Democratic incumbents into safer seats while making five out of the 11 Republican districts more vulnerable,\u201d Republican Rep. Mike Garcia said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/politics\/story\/2021-12-20\/latino-political-power-big-winner-california-congressional-map\">statement<\/a> to the Los Angeles Times.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to Garcia, Republican Reps. Tom McClintock, David Valadao, Ken Calvert and Michelle Steel are all in more competitive districts, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Redistrict\/status\/1472957127685771269\">according<\/a> to forecaster David Wasserman, a senior editor at The Cook Political Report.<\/p>\n<p>While California\u2019s map bolsters its congressional Democratic supermajority, it is far from the only state to debut new maps that some have alleged are unfair.
