Nancy Pelosi.<\/p>\n<p>Breed had been among the first mayors nationwide to embrace the \u201cdefund the police\u201d movement, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/law-and-order\/2021\/02\/26\/san-francisco-to-redistribute-120-million-from-police-to-black-community\/\">proposing<\/a> last year to cut $120 million from law enforcement to organizations in the black community.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>But last week, she <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2021\/12\/14\/watch-san-francisco-mayor-drops-defund-the-police-calls-bullst-on-progressive-police-policies\/\">said<\/a>: \u201cIt is time for the reign of criminals to end. (Photo by Justin Sullivan\/Getty Images)\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>San Francisco Mayor London Breed (Justin Sullivan\/Getty Images)<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Many around the nation were surprised and delighted, given that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2021\/12\/08\/abc-news-shows-murder-surging-12-cities-doesnt-acknowledge-democrat-controlled\/\">twelve<\/a> major Democrat-governed cities have hit new homicide records and violent crime is out of control in the wake of the Black Lives Matter protests and police \u201creforms.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But Boudin joined a group of local officials Monday who declared their opposition to Breed\u2019s new plan to tackle crime.<\/p>\n<p>The&nbsp;<em>San Francisco Chronicle<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfchronicle.com\/sf\/article\/D-A-Chesa-Boudin-joins-critics-of-Breed-s-16717418.php\">reports<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"27\">\n<p>Boudin, Board of Supervisors President Shamann Walton and Public Defender Mano Raju said at a news conference Monday that the plan was flawed because it relied on failed policies to deal with problems.<\/p>\n<p>\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Boudin said during the news conference that he is \u201coutraged\u201d at the human suffering, flagrant violations of laws and safety concerns faced by families in the Tenderloin. But he also said, \u201cWe can\u2019t arrest and prosecute our way out of problems that are afflicting the Tenderloin.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cArresting people who are addicted to drugs, jailing people who have mental health struggles, putting folks who are vending hot dogs or other food on the streets in cages will not solve these problems, and they are certainly not the only tools available,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRight now in San Francisco it\u2019s easier to get high than it is to get help. That has to change,\u201d he said. \u201cI will do everything in my power to make the Tenderloin safe for all of San Francisco.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Boudin came to office <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/san-franciscos-newly-elected-da-pledges-not-to-prosecute-public-urination-other-quality-of-life-crimes\">promising<\/a> not to prosecute so-called \u201cquality-of-life\u201d crimes like public urination \u2014 a sharp contrast to the \u201cbroken window\u201d policing that many believe helped clean up cities like New York in the 1990s.<\/p>\n<p>The latter theory holds that prosecuting minor crimes discourages major ones, sending a positive signal about the presence of law enforcement and punishing people who might otherwise be inclined to commit more serious offenses.<\/p>\n<p>Boudin and Gasc\u00f3n represent a new cohort of left-wing prosecutors around the nation who are committed to reducing prison sentences and incarceration rates, largely because of racial disparities. Crime has risen in many cities where they are in office.<\/p>\n<p>Boudin <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcbayarea.com\/news\/local\/exclusive-sf-district-attorney-chesa-boudin-officially-forced-into-recall-election-next-june\/2725737\/\">faces<\/a> a recall election next June; Gasc\u00f3n survived a recall effort last year that failed to gather enough signatures.<\/p>\n<p><em>Joel B.
