In a recent interview with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.co.uk\/article\/nicole-kidman-im-wilful-dont-put-me-in-a-box-9f3clp6kx\">The Sunday Times<\/a>, he said, \u201cIt\u2019s heartbreaking and a little chilling to see members of the artistic community resegregating ourselves.\u201d when addressing prioritizing \u201crepresentation\u201d in casting.<\/p>\n<p>The 60-year-old filmmaker\u2019s comments came in response to criticism over his casting of actor Javier Bardem, who is Spanish, to play Cuban Desi Arnez in the new film, \u201cBeing the Ricardos.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sorkin, best known for TV shows like \u201cThe West Wing\u201d and films like \u201cThe Social Network,\u201d went on to add, \u201cYou can act being attracted to someone, but can\u2019t act gay or straight. So this notion that only gay actors should play gay characters? That only a Cuban actor should play Desi? Honestly, I think it\u2019s the mother of all empty gestures and a bad idea.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Many in the entertainment media aren\u2019t taking kindly to Sorkin\u2019s classic liberal values.<\/p>\n<p>MTV movie critic Hanna Ines Flint <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/HannaFlint\/status\/1472541515901808640?s=20\">condemned<\/a> his comments as insensitive, saying, \u201cAaron Sorkin doubling down by calling the need for representation \u2018resegregation\u2019 now. It\u2019s heartbreaking to see a screenwriter I was a fan of be deliberately obtuse towards people\u2019s valid criticisms.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lyra Hale, managing editor of Fangirlish, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TheAltSource\/status\/1472702042179346434?s=20\">said<\/a>, \u201cAaron Sorkin doesn\u2019t understand that it\u2019s not about only gay actors playing gay characters or only Cubans playing Desi. It\u2019s about underrepresented communities having an opportunity to take a part in the stories being told with an authenticity others don\u2019t understand.
