And the idea that affordable care or coverage might be tied in any way to one\u2019s lifestyle choices was particularly offensive: when conservatives complained that an ACA mandate providing free hormonal birth control was akin to prostitution, it caused a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rush_Limbaugh%E2%80%93Sandra_Fluke_controversy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">nationwide scandal<\/a>. And when a Republican governor proposed levying a moderate additional charge against Medicaid recipients who were overweight or smoked, the idea was widely&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailykos.com\/stories\/2011\/4\/4\/963276\/-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">derided<\/a>&nbsp;as \u201cnoodle-headed\u201d by progressives.<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, the idea that the Left would ever limit someone\u2019s access to healthcare on moral or ideological grounds was considered laughable \u2014 a bogeyman invented by the Right in the form of a memorably hysterical panic about \u201cdeath panels.\u201d When Sarah Palin claimed that Obama\u2019s healthcare bill would ration care only to those deemed \u201cworthy\u201d by government bureaucrats, the fact-checking site&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politifact.com\/truth-o-meter\/statements\/2009\/aug\/10\/sarah-palin\/sarah-palin-barack-obama-death-panel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Politifact<\/a>&nbsp;declared it the Lie of the Year, writing, \u201cPalin\u2019s statement sounds more like a science fiction movie (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Soylent_Green\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Soylent Green<\/a>, anyone?) than part of an actual bill before Congress.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Suffice to say, things have changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u2026<\/p>\n<p>In all these cases, the notion of depriving vaccine holdouts of affordable treatment was met with widespread acclaim \u2014 in keeping with the idea, promoted by everyone from the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/12\/08\/opinion\/covid-michigan-surge.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">paper of record<\/a>&nbsp;to the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/vaccine-mandate-federal-employees\/2021\/09\/09\/1c1ce9dc-116b-11ec-882f-2dd15a067dc4_story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">current President<\/a>, that the pandemic would\u2019ve been over ages ago if only they\u2019d sucked it up and gotten their shot. And yet the folks cheering on these measures are the very same people who, only a few short years ago, mocked accusations that they supported ideologically-driven triage, while also grieving the indignity and suffering that punitive healthcare policies would inflict on the most vulnerable among us.<\/p>\n<p>Read Rosenfield\u2019s full essay, titled \u201cThe Left would sacrifice the unvaccinated,\u201d at <a href=\"https:\/\/unherd.com\/2021\/12\/the-left-would-sacrifice-the-unvaccinated\/\">UnHerd<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Rosenfield\u2019s essay came hours after President Joe Biden issued a statement congratulating the vaccinated while warning the unvaccinated that they are \u201clooking at a winter of severe illness and death for yourselves, your families, and the hospitals you may still overwhelm.\u201d Conservative pundit Ben Domenech, among others, mocked the White House statement: \u201cWe are all in this together unless you are in the outgroup in which case you gonna die.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"6.6111111111111\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">We are all in this together unless you are in the outgroup in which case you gonna die. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/wGUJOaTMyk\">pic.twitter.com\/wGUJOaTMyk<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Ben Domenech (@bdomenech) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/bdomenech\/status\/1472756711672983555?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">December 20, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Harvard economist Scott Kominers added a lengthy Twitter thread, explaining the problems with Biden\u2019s statement as policy:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"13.157142857143\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">I know the decision not to get vaccinated is an active choice (for many \u2014 *not* for those with allergies or immune problems or similar).<\/p>\n<p>And I&#8217;m all in favor of people internalizing externalities.<\/p>\n<p>But I still think this type of messaging is really, really problematic\u2026. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Pgz7pHVp3p\">pic.twitter.com\/Pgz7pHVp3p<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Scott Kominers (@skominers) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/skominers\/status\/1472925226086322193?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">December 20, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Not only did the language lack \u201ccompassion,\u201d Kominers noted, but it was also unlikely to inspire people to take the vaccine.<\/p>\n<p><em>Joel B.
