But a wider effort to destroy the dozens of nuclear sites in distant parts of Iran \u2014 the kind of attack Israeli officials have threatened \u2014 would be beyond the current resources of the Israeli armed forces.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s very difficult \u2014 I would say even impossible \u2014 to launch a campaign that would take care of all these sites,\u201d said Relik Shafir, a retired Israeli Air Force general who was a pilot in a&nbsp;1981 strike on an Iraqi nuclear facility.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\">[\u2026]\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\">Iran has dozens of nuclear sites, some deep underground that would be hard for Israeli bombs to quickly penetrate and destroy, Mr. Shafir said. The Israeli Air Force does not have warplanes large enough to carry the latest bunker-busting bombs, so the more protected sites would have to be struck repeatedly with less effective missiles, a process that might take days or even weeks, Mr. Shafir added.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"css-s99gbd StoryBodyCompanionColumn\" readability=\"32.5\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\" readability=\"10\">\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\">\u201cIn the world we live in, the only air force that can maintain a campaign is the U.S. Air Force,\u201d he told the paper.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The report comes amid collapsing negotiations in Vienna in a bid to resuscitate the JCPOA nuclear deal, from which the Trump administration withdrew in 2018.<\/p>\n<p>Last week,&nbsp;world power delegates said the 2015 accord is no longer relevant.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cAs of this moment, we still have not been able to get down to real negotiations,\u201d&nbsp;senior European diplomats told reporters.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are wasting precious time dealing with new&nbsp;<span class=\"il\">Iranian<\/span>&nbsp;positions inconsistent with the JCPOA or that go beyond it,\u201d the diplomats said. \u201cTime is running out.
