Over a dozen children were among those rescued, including an 11-month-old American citizen, according to the <em>New York Post,<\/em> citing a release from Project Dynamo.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cIt feels amazing to bring American citizens home. Our countrymen. These are our neighbors,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wtsp.com\/article\/news\/nation-world\/tampa-volunteers-rescue-39-people-afghanistan\/67-7ab65f80-f3b1-4ab8-84e2-35909c4841fd\">said<\/a> Bryan Stern, Project Dynamo cofounder, per WTSP.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this week, Stern and Abdul Wasit traveled to Afghanistan from an undisclosed country. With the help of a small group of volunteers, the two brought evacuees to a safe house in the Kabul area, the <em>Post<\/em> reports.<\/p>\n<p>Those being rescued received necessary vaccinations, food, water, and coronavirus testing at the safe house before they were taken to the Kabul International Airport, according to WTSP.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>Around 4:00 p.m. local time Friday, evacuees boarded two flights that were funded by Berry Aviation, the <em>Post<\/em> reports.<\/p>\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_text utility__text\" readability=\"76.122375524895\">\n<p>\u201cThis is the first known major airlift rescue with American boots on the ground since the U.S. government abandoned the country of Afghanistan in August,\u201d said James Judge, a spokesman for Project Dynamo, according to WTSP.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are proud to announce that the evacuees and two Dynamo team members are now safely out of Afghan airspace at this time and on their way home to America,\u201d Judge added.<\/p>\n<p>All evacuees received a green light from the State Department after undergoing preliminary inspection but were subject to go through immigration and customs when they arrived at JFK airport in New York City, according to the <em>Post.&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The planes arrived at JFK Saturday morning, WTSP reports.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B3\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p>Stern said this is the first rescue where evacuees did not have to stop at a refugee camp, the <em>Post<\/em> reports.<\/p>\n<p><span> \u201cNo American or Permanent Resident should be forced to stay in a refugee camp while attempting to return to their own families, homes and communities in the United States,\u201d Stern said in a statement, per the outlet.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Project Dynamo claims to have extracted 2,000 Americans since Kabul fell into the hands of the Taliban in August, according to WTSP.<\/p>\n<p>The group is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wfla.com\/news\/hillsborough-county\/tampa-volunteers-rescue-47-american-citizens-legal-residents-from-afghanistan\/\">made up<\/a>&nbsp;of current and former servicemembers, according to WFLA.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProject Dynamo is an umbrella term <a href=\"https:\/\/www.projectdynamo.org\/about-us\">encompassing<\/a> two operations \u2014 Digital Dunkirk and Dynamo II,\u201d according to the about page on the organization\u2019s website.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBoth efforts are being run by extraordinary civilians with no ties to the U.S. government attempting to do the impossible \u2014 saving Americans and Afghan allies who are fearing for their lives as the Taliban regains control of Afghanistan,\u201d the website states.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Volunteers from the nonprofit organization Project Dynamo rescued 39 U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents stranded in Afghanistan on Friday, according to reports.
