Are you open to changing either the rules or the structure of the filibuster to do that?\u201d Baier asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell, first of all, voting, just voting is the bedrock of democracy,\u201d Manchin began. \u201cWe should all be concerned about that, Bret. It shouldn\u2019t be Democrat or Republican. As an American, and the democracy and the freedoms we enjoy, becomes because we have an open process of electing our officials, and believing, and making sure it\u2019s secured. So we should be working on that together.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd next of all, if you can make the Senate work better \u2014 the rules are something we\u2019ve changed over the years; 232 years, there\u2019s been rule changes,&nbsp;but there\u2019s never been a change with the filibuster, the rights of the minority,\u201d Manchin said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd I made no commitments or promises on that. I am working on trying to make the Senate work better, bringing bills to the floor, amending them, having debates, understanding, being transparent to the public, what we agree or disagree [on].\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo, the 60-vote threshold stays,\u201d Baier ascertained.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe 60-vote threshold stays under what you\u2019re proposing, maybe some exemptions or reforms. Is that what I\u2019m hearing?\u201d he asked again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat you\u2019re hearing is basically, can we work on the rules that make this Senate work rather [than] the deadlock that we have right now?\u201d Manchin responded. \u201cEveryone thinks the end-all do-all is basically in the filibuster. It\u2019s basically in how we operate and proceed every day of the Senate, which we\u2019re not doing. That\u2019s what needs to be changed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Manchin made headlines earlier in the interview when he said definitively that he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/this-is-a-no-joe-manchin-says-he-cannot-vote-to-continue-on-build-back-better\">would not vote<\/a> for the Biden administration\u2019s \u201cBuild Back Better\u201d social spending bill. The Daily Wire reported:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cYou\u2019re done? This is a no?\u201d Baier pressed.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThis is a no on this legislation,\u201d Manchin repeated, adding, \u201cI have tried everything I know to do and the president has worked diligently, he\u2019s been wonderful to work with, he knows I\u2019ve had concerns and the problems I\u2019ve had and \u2014 you know, the thing we should all be is directing our attention towards the variants, the COVID that we have coming back at us in so many different aspects and different ways, it\u2019s affecting our lives again. We have inflation that basically could harm \u2014 really harm a lot of Americans and especially those who are most needy and having a hard time struggling right now. So I think that\u2019s where attention needs to be directed towards immediately \u2014 and this is been going on for five and a half months.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Senate leadership reportedly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/report-senate-gives-up-on-passing-bidens-build-back-better-in-2021\">gave up on passing the bill<\/a> after Manchin <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/manchin-pushes-further-cuts-transparency-to-build-back-better-bill-citing-inflation-cbo-score\">maintained his opposition<\/a> in interactions with the press several times during the week.
