governance\u201d regarding the position of the ECJ in Northern Ireland.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis remains a fundamental issue of democratic accountability,\u201d Frost said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/lord-frost-statement-on-the-protocol-on-irelandnorthern-ireland-17-december-2021--2\">statement<\/a> released on Friday. \u201cNor is it reasonable or fair for disputes between the UK and the EU relating to the Protocol to be settled in the EU Court of Justice, the court of one of the parties.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B3\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThe Withdrawal Agreement already provides for the use of an independent arbitration mechanism instead, and the simplest and most durable way forward would be to agree that this should be the sole route for settling disputes in future,\u201d the statement continued.<\/p>\n<p>Frost had also proposed that a so-called \u201cinterim agreement\u201d be implemented in order to \u201cdeal with the most acute problems, including trade frictions, subsidy control, and governance\u201d.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cOur preference would be to reach a comprehensive solution dealing with all the issues,\u201d Frost wrote, going on to say that such an interim agreement would \u201cstill leave many underlying strains unresolved\u201d, and would be \u201cprovisional by nature\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe UK has proposed a number of possible ways forward, but regrettably it has not so far been possible to make progress even on what the core elements of an interim agreement might be,\u201d Frost said. \u201cA solution needs to be found urgently early next year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For as long as there is no agreed solution, we remain ready to use the Article 16 safeguard mechanism if that is the only way to protect the prosperity and stability of Northern Ireland and its people,\u201d Frost also warned.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B4\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p>On Saturday Frost&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/europe\/2021\/12\/19\/brexit-minister-frost-resigns-over-bojos-lockdowns-green-agenda-high-taxes\/\">resigned from the government<\/a>, leaving it unclear how European Union in January of last year, the issue of Northern Ireland has remained contentious well past that date.<\/p>\n<p>The post-Brexit situation in the region was meant to be resolved back in 2019, with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/explainers-53724381\">signing<\/a> of the Northern Ireland Protocol, but issues surrounding the agreement have since cropped up.<\/p>\n<p>According to Frost, the agreement has since become \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/europe\/2021\/09\/05\/brexit-isnt-done-boris-govt-happy-to-let-eu-law-apply-in-northern-ireland-keep-internal-border-for-eus-sake\/\">the biggest source of mistrust<\/a>\u201d between the United Kingdom and the European Union.<\/p>\n<p>The protocol has repeatedly come under fire from pro-British Unionists in Northern Ireland, who have criticised its implementation of border checks between Northern Ireland and the rest of the United Kingdom.<\/p>\n<p>Leader of the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) Jeffrey Donaldson has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/europe\/2021\/09\/09\/unionists-vow-collapse-northern-ireland-govt-over-sellout-eu\/\">claimed<\/a> that the protocol \u201cfundamentally undermines \u2026 the economic integrity of the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland\u2019s position in it\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are totally opposed to the protocol as it presently exists,\u201d Donaldson said in September this year. \u201cWe will neither accept it nor will we work it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Unionists have also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk\/news\/northern-ireland\/identity-of-the-unionist-community-sacrificed-for-the-ni-protocol-40471831.html\">alleged<\/a> that their interests were not given the same weight as those of Irish nationalists during Brexit negotiations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t think that there\u2019s been just and equal treatment of both communities.
