The petition comes days after 26-year-old Rogel Aguilera-Mederos was given his sentence, where he was found guilty on 42 counts including vehicular homicide.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis was a terrible accident. I know I take the responsibility, but it wasn\u2019t intentional,\u201d said Aguilera-Mederos.<\/p>\n<p>In 2019, the Colorado truck driver was driving on Interstate-70 in Lakewood when his commercial vehicle lost its brakes. Aguilera-Mederos passed a runaway truck ramp, which prosecutors focused heavily on. (Lakewood Police Department via AP, File)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s unbelievable honestly because it could happen anytime, anywhere, and if the brakes fail the brakes fail, it\u2019s a malfunction,\u201d said truck driver David Splain.<\/p>\n<p>Millions are now asking for Colorado Gov. Jared Polis (D) to grant him clemency or commutation as time served. Organizers of the petition said no one but the company that the trucker was employed by should be held accountable.<\/p>\n<p>However, officials said a shorter sentence wasn\u2019t possible under Colorado law, which has mandatory minimum rules and sentence enhancers stricter than most states.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo, even if he\u2019s sentenced to the minimum, there\u2019s so many charges and so many victims that it adds up in an unbelievably long, basically life, sentence like this,\u201d said Criminal Defense Attorney Jay Tiftickjian.<\/p>\n<p>As the case continues to gain national attention, Gov.
