I think most scientists did not \u2014 upon whose advice and direction we have relied \u2014 didn\u2019t see Delta coming,\u201d Harris told The Los Angeles Times in an interview. \u201cWe didn\u2019t see Omicron coming. And that\u2019s the nature of what this, this awful virus has been, which as it turns out, has mutations and variants.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Times <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/politics\/story\/2021-12-17\/kamala-harris-in-interview-says-administration-did-not-anticipate-omicron-variant\">reported<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><em>President Biden celebrated \u201cindependence\u201d from the virus in an upbeat July 4 speech, saying, \u201cWhile the virus hasn\u2019t been vanquished, we know this: It no longer controls our lives. It no longer paralyzes our nation. And it\u2019s within our power to make sure it never does again.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>At the time, some public health experts warned that his optimism was premature, given that the Delta variant was already a significant threat. Harris denied that the administration declared victory prematurely, or ever.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have not been victorious over it,\u201d Harris added. \u201cI don\u2019t think that in any regard anyone can claim victory when, you know, there are 800,000 people who are dead because of this virus.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The report highlighted past remarks that Harris made during 2020 election that many critics say contributed to vaccine hesitancy:<\/p>\n<p><em>Harris hedged when asked&nbsp;in September 2020&nbsp;whether she would take a vaccine if it was approved before the election, saying it would be \u201can issue for all of us\u201d because \u201cI would not trust Donald Trump.\u201d She added, however, that she would trust \u201ca credible source of information that talks about the efficacy and the reliability.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Harris\u2019 approval rating, recorded at an abysmal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2021\/11\/07\/biden-approval-falls-38-midterms-loom-usa-today-suffolk-poll\/6320098001\/\">28%<\/a> last month, is the lowest number ever recorded for a vice president and the numbers are even worse when considering that the administration has been in office less than 1 year.<\/p>\n<p>Business Insider <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/kamala-harris-approval-rating-historic-low-compared-to-other-vp-2021-11\">added<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><em>At this early stage of a modern presidency, Harris\u2019 numbers in the USA Today\/Suffolk poll are unprecedented. The closest comparison \u2014 which involves slightly different methodology and margins of error \u2014 would be former Vice President Dick Cheney, the most unpopular US vice president in polling history. He&nbsp;bottomed out at 30%&nbsp;in Gallup\u2019s tracking survey, but that wasn\u2019t until the end of former President George W. Bush\u2019s second term in 2007.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Harris has&nbsp;taken on thorny assignments early on in her tenure as VP, including running point on the administration\u2019s efforts at handling the migration surge of asylum seekers at the southern border.
