However, Sandmann asked for $275 million in damages in his lawsuit against NBC Universal and MSNBC.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cAt this time I would like to release that NBC and I have reached a settlement,\u201d Sandmann <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/N1ckSandmann\/status\/1471964919637876736\">tweeted<\/a>. \u201cThe terms are confidential.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"8.0555555555556\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">At this time I would like to release that NBC and I have reached a settlement. The terms are confidential.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Nicholas Sandmann (@N1ckSandmann) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/N1ckSandmann\/status\/1471964919637876736?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">December 17, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>NBC is the third corporate media organization to settle with Sandmann after he and his classmates were accused of mocking Native American activist Nathan Phillips during last January\u2019s March for Life event. Sandmann was wearing a red \u201cMake America Great Again\u201d hat while he stood close to Phillips with an apparent smirk on his face that was widely noted and mocked.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>Many in the media painted Sandmanmn as an aggressive racist who initiated the conflict with Phillips. However, an independent investigation&nbsp;<a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/news\/covington-high-school-investigation-finds-no-evidence-students-made-offensive-or-racist-statements\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">concluded<\/a>&nbsp;there was \u201cno evidence that the students performed a \u2018Build the wall\u2019 chant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the days after the media\u2019s attacks on Sandmann, witness cell phone footage showed that Phillips initially approached Sandmann. Footage also&nbsp;<a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/the-media\/2020\/01\/07\/cnn-settles-lawsuit-with-covington-catholic-student-nick-sandmann\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">showed<\/a>&nbsp;that a group of Black Hebrew Israelites confronted both Sandmann\u2019s and Phillips\u2019 groups well before the two were face to face.<\/p>\n<p>In an interview with NBC, Sandmann explained that he stayed in Phillips\u2019 face because he did not want to be, as&nbsp;he&nbsp;<a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/clips\/2019\/01\/23\/covingtons-sandmann-on-why-he-didnt-walk-away-i-didnt-want-to-be-disrespectful-to-mr-phillips\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said:&nbsp;<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"10\">\n<p>\u2026viewed as disrespectful. Well, now I wish I would have walked away. I didn\u2019t want to be disrespectful to Mr. Phillips and walk away if he was trying to talk to me. But certainly I was surrounded by a lot of people I didn\u2019t know that had their phones out, had cameras and I didn\u2019t want to bump into anyone or seem like I was trying to do something.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Sandmann\u2019s attorneys&nbsp;<a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/news\/covington-catholic-student-nicholas-sandmann-says-he-settled-with-nbc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">accused<\/a>&nbsp;NBC of making \u201cat least fifteen defamatory television broadcasts, six defamatory online articles, and many tweets falsely accusing Nicholas and his Covington Catholic High School (\u2018CovCath\u2019) classmates of racist acts,\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sandmann\u2019s settlement with NBC comes after two settlements with the&nbsp;<em>Washington Post<\/em>&nbsp;and CNN. He settled the $275 million lawsuit with CNN in January and the $250 million lawsuit against the&nbsp;<em>Washington Post<\/em>&nbsp;in July.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, Sandmann\u2019s attorney, Todd McMurtry, said, \u201cAs many as 13 other defendants will be filed.\u201d Other defendants included ABC, CBS, the Guardian, Huffington Post, NPR, the Hill, and smaller outlets.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Covington Catholic High School student Nicholas Sandmann announced Friday that he settled a $275 million defamation lawsuit against NBC.
