Version: 4.0.47--><div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/GettyImages-1148234039-e1639745785996-640x335-1.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\" \/><\/div>\n<p class=\"subheading\">Britain has finalised its first post-Brexit trade agreement, righting a \u201chistoric wrong\u201d by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/uk-and-australia-sign-historic-trade-deal\">signing a deal<\/a> with Australia.<\/p>\n<p>While it was part of the European Union, Britain\u2019s international trade policy was controlled by Brussels, which imposes a Common Commercial Policy on member-states.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<p>This saw tariff gates slammed in the face of British Commonwealth nations including Australia when Britain joined the European Economic Community (EEC), as the EU then was, in the 1970s, and EU-wide trade agreements with Britain\u2019s trading partners were largely unrealised for decades afterwards, as Continental member-states such as France and Germany believed they would not be in the interests of their own farmers and manufacturers.<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, Prime Minister Boris Johnson admitted in the summer that the impact of Britain joining the EEC and ending its preferential trade terms with the Old Commonwealth \u201cwas pretty devastating for a lot of farmers in Australia. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.afr.com\/politics\/federal\/uk-trade-deal-rights-a-historic-wrong-20210616-p581ey\">They committed suicide<\/a>, some of them, in the face of what happened to Australian agriculture in the \u201970s when the UK went into what was then the Common Market,\u201d and Australia\u2019s trade minister said the then-pending post-Brexit deal would \u201cright [a] historic wrong\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The betrayal of Britain entering an exclusionary Common Market including West Germany and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=WjD7aXLtcC4\">against the wishes of most of the British Commonwealth<\/a>&nbsp;was felt especially keenly in the 1970s, given the Second World War in which many Commonwealth citizens had fought for the mother country was still a fresh memory for many adults.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>The blow was felt somewhat less keenly than it might have been, however, due to French leader General Charles De Gaulle having&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Ga6-gcfZXzs\">vetoed<\/a>&nbsp;an earlier attempt by the British to join the EEC in the 1960s, which signalled to Commonwealth nations that they would have to look beyond the British market if they wanted to survive what proved to be an inevitable stab in the back.<\/p>\n<p>In the 1960s, Australian prime minister&nbsp;Sir Robert Menzies had&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=UCw7wlxjc-k\">warned<\/a> that British entry into the EEC in that decade would have delivered a \u201ctremendous blow\u201d to exporters in Australia, and \u201can almost fatal blow\u201d to exporters in New Zealand.<\/p>\n<p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Mr. Menzies Talks On The Common Market  (1961)\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/UCw7wlxjc-k?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<p>Hailing the new trade deal, Britain\u2019s Trade Secretary&nbsp;Anne-Marie Trevelyan said its signing was a \u201clandmark moment in the historic and vital relationship between our two Commonwealth nations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis agreement is tailored to the UK\u2019s strengths, and delivers for businesses, families, and consumers in every part of the UK \u2013 helping us to level up,\u201d she said, adding that it had \u201cdemonstrate[d] what the UK can achieve as an agile, independent sovereign trading nation.
