The work is in progress and it is progressing successfully,\u201d Putin <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/tass.com\/economy\/1376683\"><span>said<\/span><\/a><span> after <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/tass.com\/politics\/1375095\"><span>meeting<\/span><\/a><span> with Mongolian president Ukhnaa Khurelsukh in Moscow.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<p><span>\u201cThe optimal route, length and other parameters have already been determined. The feasibility study is being prepared. I believe it will be ready in broad terms in weeks to come,\u201d Putin said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The project Putin referred to has been in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gazprom.com\/press\/news\/2021\/october\/article540773\/\"><span>development<\/span><\/a><span> since December 2019, when Russian state oil company Gazprom signed a memorandum of understanding with the government of Mongolia to build an extension of Russia\u2019s Power of Siberia 2 gas pipeline that would run across Mongolian territory into China. The extension would become known as the Soyuz-Vostok pipeline.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>According to Russian state media, the current schedule for the project envisions breaking ground in 2024. When completed, the Soyuz-Vostok pipeline will have substantially higher capacity than Power of Siberia 2 does.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p><span>Thursday was Putin\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/tass.com\/politics\/1376657\"><span>first meeting<\/span><\/a><span> with Khurelsukh and the Mongolian president\u2019s first foreign trip since his election in June. Putin said he was honored Khurelsukh chose Moscow as his first destination and noted this year is the 100th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Mongolia and Russia, which was the first country to recognize Mongolia\u2019s independence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cCertainly, we too are interested in close cooperation with our Mongolian friends,\u201d Putin said, applauding a 24-percent growth in trade and a huge increase of railroad traffic this year despite the coronavirus pandemic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Russia was concerned Mongolia\u2019s turbulent election could produce an outcome unfavorable to Moscow\u2019s interests, but Khurelsukh <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eastasiaforum.org\/2021\/10\/15\/mongolias-new-president-wont-affect-ties-with-russia\/\"><span>declared<\/span><\/a><span> his support for both Russia\u2019s Greater Eurasian Partnership and China\u2019s Belt and Road Initiative, the two big regional economic and political projects.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Khurelsukh was a former prime minister who <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-health-coronavirus-mongolia\/mongolian-prime-minister-submits-resignation-after-covid-19-protests-idUSKBN29Q1GT\"><span>resigned<\/span><\/a><span> in January 2021 after massive protests in the capital of Ulaanbaatar against his government\u2019s handling of the coronavirus pandemic. The protests broke out after a viral video showed a woman in nightgown and slippers getting marched off to a quarantine facility with a baby clutched in her arms. Mongolian weather is not conducive to wearing nightgowns and slippers outdoors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Khurelsukh <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2021\/6\/9\/former-mongolian-prime-minister-khurelsukh-wins-presidency\"><span>successfully<\/span><\/a><span> ran for president after the current officeholder, Khaltmaa Battulga, was prevented from running for re-election by a controversial constitutional amendment that limited the presidency to a single term.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Mongolia still has a few thorny issues to resolve with Russia, notably some Mongolian dam projects vital for local mining projects but potentially damaging to the ecology of eastern Siberia. Mongolia also likes to keep its political options open \u2013 it has cultivated a relationship with South Korea, and purchases coronavirus vaccines from India as well as Russia and China.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Some analysts believe Mongolia could potentially be Russia\u2019s \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/theasanforum.org\/mongolia-russias-best-friend-in-asia\/\"><span>best friend<\/span><\/a><span>\u201d in Asia, while others think Putin secretly views Mongolia as an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/foreignpolicy.com\/2020\/06\/26\/russia-putin-mnb-wants-to-keep-mongolia-in-its-place\/\"><span>irritant<\/span><\/a><span> to be contained and subdued because it is a somewhat volatile democracy sandwiched between authoritarian giants China and Russia \u2013 both of which counted Mongolia as an imperial possession at various points in history.
