According to Bloomberg, \u201cOf the roughly 263,500 people tested, 7.98% were positive for the virus\u201d:<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"7.4411764705882\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">BREAKING: New York state reports 21,027 new Covid-19 cases on Friday, the highest daily total of the pandemic <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/yv6zqFHwNB\">https:\/\/t.co\/yv6zqFHwNB<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/btM4pecTvb\">pic.twitter.com\/btM4pecTvb<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Bloomberg (@business) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/business\/status\/1471935018792628225?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">December 17, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>According to the <em>New York Times\u2019<\/em> coronavirus tracker, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2021\/us\/covid-cases.html\">averages<\/a> the cases over the last week state by state, New York is reporting a daily average of 11,482 cases \u2014 the most in the nation \u2014 or 59 per 100,000. That reflects a 56 percent increase over the last two weeks.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Additionally, New York is reporting a daily average of 4,146 hospitalizations, or 21 per 100,000 \u2014 a 25 percent increase over the last two weeks.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">This comes amid mounting restrictions and mandates in the Empire State, which<\/span>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.governor.ny.gov\/news\/governor-hochul-expands-vaccine-mandate-include-staff-omh-and-opwdd-hospital-settings\">mandated<\/a> vaccines for healthcare workers. New York City, specifically, has taken far more aggressive action, mandating vaccines for city workers as well as private sector employees. Additionally, Mayor Bill de Blasio (D) has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2021\/12\/11\/new-york-issues-ultimatum-businesses-check-patrons-vaccination-status-require-masks\/\">implemented<\/a> the Key to NYC Pass, which forces businesses to discriminate against unvaccinated individuals. He recently made waves after extending the requirement to children ages 5-11, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2021\/08\/03\/de-blasio-unvaccinated-activities\/\">forcing<\/a> businesses, such as indoor restaurants, to deny a child\u2019s entry without proof of receiving at least one shot.<\/p>\n<p>The state\u2019s highest daily case rate also follows Gov. Kathy Hochul\u2019s (D) announcement this month, requiring businesses to either require proof of vaccination from customers or implement a sweeping mask mandate. The rule went into effect December 13.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs Governor, my two top priorities are to protect the health of New Yorkers and to protect the health of our economy. The temporary measures I am taking today will help accomplish this through the holiday season,\u201d Hochul <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2021\/12\/11\/new-york-issues-ultimatum-businesses-check-patrons-vaccination-status-require-masks\/\">said<\/a> in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>During a Friday appearance on MSNBC\u2019s&nbsp;<em>Katy Tur Reports<\/em>, Hochul <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/clips\/2021\/12\/17\/ny-gov-hochul-on-including-booster-in-fully-vaccinated-requirement-we-will-make-it-happen\/\">said<\/a> New York will eventually change the definition of fully vaccinated to include individuals who have also received the booster shot.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re working on this.
