And yet it\u2019s still happening, and we know it\u2019s happening at an alarming, horrific rate with the genocide that we now witness being carried out by the Chinese government in the Xinjiang region,\u201d Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL), a sponsor and forceful proponent of the bill, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rubio.senate.gov\/public\/index.cfm\/2021\/12\/rubio-s-uyghur-forced-labor-prevention-act-to-become-law\"><span>said<\/span><\/a><span> from the Senate floor on Thursday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThe United States is so reliant on China that we have turned a blind eye to the slave labor that makes our clothes, our solar panels, and much more,\u201d Rubio lamented when the House passed the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act this week.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>After the bill was approved by the Senate, Rubio said corporations would \u201cno longer be able to continue to make Americans \u2013 every one of us, frankly \u2013 unwitting accomplices in the atrocities, in the genocide that\u2019s being committed by the Chinese Communist Party.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<div id=\"attachment_17096738\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\" readability=\"32\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-17096738\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/GettyImages-1232439030-e1626284946688.jpg\" alt=\"Senator Marco Rubio, R-FL, speaks during a Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation confirmation hearing on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC, April 21, 2021. (Photo by Graeme Jennings \/ POOL \/ AFP) (Photo by GRAEME JENNINGS\/POOL\/AFP via Getty Images)\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo by GRAEME JENNINGS\/POOL\/AFP via Getty Images<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span>Co-sponsor Jeff Merkley (D-OR) <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/senate\/586239-senate-passes-uyghur-bill-confirms-china-ambassador\"><span>said<\/span><\/a><span> the new law will send \u201ca resounding and unequivocal message against genocide and slave labor wherever these evils appear.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cAs the Chinese government tries to whitewash their genocide and claim a propaganda victory with the upcoming Olympics, this legislation sends a powerful, bipartisan message that the United States will not turn a blind eye,\u201d Merkley <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/senate-passes-uyghur-forced-labor-prevention-act-in-major-step-toward-holding-china-accountable-for-repression-in-xinjiang\/2021\/12\/16\/a8043b0c-5ea6-11ec-8665-aed48580f911_story.html\"><span>said<\/span><\/a><span>&nbsp;\u2013 a noble sentiment, but one that makes it harder to understand why any civilized nation would participate in the Beijing Olympics, which the United States will play in.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Thursday saw the third attempt to pass a version of the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act. An effort to achieve unanimous consent on Wednesday was blocked by Sen. Ron Wyden (D-OR) when he attempted to attach an unrelated extension to child tax credits.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Rubio was able to attract necessary Democrat support for the third, ultimately successful, vote by lifting his hold on President Biden\u2019s nominee for ambassador to China, Nicholas Burns. Burns was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2021-12-16\/burns-confirmed-as-envoy-to-china-after-senate-s-uygur-bill-deal\"><span>confirmed<\/span><\/a><span> by a vote of 75-18 after the Uyghur act was passed. Two other Biden nominees were also confirmed to State Department posts.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B3\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/congress\/senate-passes-bill-targeting-china-over-uyghur-forced-labor-n1286160\"><span>NBC News<\/span><\/a><span> reported on Thursday there was \u201coffstage opposition from corporations with manufacturing links to China,\u201d but \u201clittle to no overt opposition\u201d to the bill. (Photo by Jemal Countess\/Getty Images for SumOfUs)<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p><span>Uyghur activists feared the Biden administration might oppose passage because it seeks cooperation from China on issues like climate change, but White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki indicated this week that President Biden supports the bill.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWe agree with Congress that action can and must be taken to hold the People\u2019s Republic of China accountable for genocide and human rights abuses and to address forced labor in Xinjiang,\u201d Psaki said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The U.S. and other nations have imposed previous restrictions on products made with Uyghur forced labor, but the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act is among the first blanket bans on Xinjiang products in the free world. The Act <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2021-12-14\/house-senate-lawmakers-agree-on-uyghur-bill-aimed-at-china\"><span>establishes<\/span><\/a><span> a \u201crebuttable presumption\u201d that nearly everything produced in Xinjiang was made with forced labor unless importers can demonstrate otherwise to the satisfaction of U.S. Customs and Border Protection.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B4\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p><span>Also on Thursday, the U.S. Commerce Department <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/news\/us-blacklists-chinese-biotech-firms-over-uyghur-surveillance\/\"><span>blacklisted<\/span><\/a><span> a dozen Chinese biotechnology firms for their participation in mass surveillance against the Uyghurs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThe scientific pursuit of biotechnology and medical innovation can save lives. (Photo by GREG BAKER\/AFP via Getty Images)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span>The Chinese Communist government was, unsurprisingly, displeased by the passage of the Uyghur act and the Commerce Department blacklist.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThe U.S. has wantonly suppressed Chinese institutions and enterprises by overstretching the concept of national security and abusing export control measures under various excuses. It has reached a point of hysteria and would stop at nothing to do so,\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fmprc.gov.cn\/mfa_eng\/xwfw_665399\/s2510_665401\/2511_665403\/202112\/t20211217_10471155.html\"><span>railed<\/span><\/a><span> Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin on Thursday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWhat the U.S. did has seriously undermined the principles of market economy and international economic and trade rules, and harmed the interests of Chinese institutions and enterprises. China deplores and rejects this.
