They should be able to participate in that.&#8221; \u2014 Pelosi&#8217;s rationale for why spouses of members of Congress should be able to trade individuals stocks is not very convincing <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/NuOw0VznVm\">pic.twitter.com\/NuOw0VznVm<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Aaron Rupar (@atrupar) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/atrupar\/status\/1471152961577439234?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">December 15, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>As noted by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/congress-stock-act-violations-senate-house-trading-2021-9\">Insider<\/a>, the STOCK Act of 2012, legislation Andrew Breitbart&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/radio\/2020\/03\/21\/peter-schweizer-if-richard-burr-is-not-prosecuted-for-insider-trading-stock-act-is-meaningless\/\">heavily backed<\/a>, was designed to combat possible insider trading and conflicts of interests among members of Congress, forcing \u201clawmakers to be more transparent about their personal financial dealings\u201d:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"14.340277777778\">\n<p>A key provision of the law mandates that lawmakers publicly \u2014 and quickly \u2014 disclose any stock trade made by themselves, a spouse, or a dependent child.<\/p>\n<p>But many members of Congress have not fully complied with the law. They offer excuses including ignorance of the law, clerical errors, and mistakes by an accountant. Insider has chronicled this widespread nature of this phenomenon in a new project, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/conflicted-congress-key-findings-stock-act-finances-investing-2021-12\">Conflicted Congress<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Lawmakers who violate the STOCK Act could be fined up to $200, a small penalty that has led several ethics watchdog groups to call for harsher penalties or an all-out ban on lawmakers from trading stocks \u2013 a practice by which Nancy Pelosi and her husband, Paul, have become <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2021\/07\/08\/report-pelosis-husband-secured-5-3-million-from-alphabet-options\/\">considerably wealthy<\/a>. This year, for instance, weeks prior to the House&nbsp;Judiciary Committee\u2019s vote on the&nbsp;antitrust legislation aimed at some major Big Tech companies, Paul Pelosi began&nbsp;\u201cexercising call options to acquire 4,000 shares of Alphabet, the parent company of Google, at a strike price of $1,200,\u201d&nbsp;<a class=\"x5l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2021-07-07\/pelosi-s-husband-locked-in-5-3-million-from-alphabet-options?sref=ohmtMHdW\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external\">according to Bloomberg<\/a>.
