After close to two decades since the original series finale, the world is a completely different place. And let\u2019s not discuss the disastrous full-length feature \u201cSex and the City\u201d movies.<\/p>\n<p>But \u201cAnd Just Like That\u201d is getting criticism for some intriguing reasons. Some viewers are saying it tries a little too hard to be woke, which winds up backfiring in execution. With the addition of a fast-talking, sexually explicit transgender podcast host and Miranda Hobbes (Cynthia Nixon) being accused of having a white savior complex, it seems like the new \u201cSex and the City\u201d is trying to cram every hot button social issue into the first two episodes.<\/p>\n<p>In a recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.elle.com\/uk\/life-and-culture\/culture\/a38498631\/cynthia-nixon-and-just-like-that-interview\/\">interview<\/a> with Elle UK, Nixon addressed the criticism and defended the series for its existence. The actress, who ran for governor of New York in 2018, said she only agreed to the project so she could \u201cto go back and [undo] the things that we really got wrong,\u201d in the original \u201cSex and the City.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Besides calling the original cast \u201coverwhelmingly white,\u201d Nixon said, \u201cWe had gay characters [in \u201cSex and the City\u201d], but a lot of the LGBT stuff in it was purely for comedic effect \u2013 and now rings harsh on the ear, I have to say.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And the racial component is front and center in the script. Miranda was a high-powered, career-minded corporate attorney in the original series. \u201cAnd Just Like That\u201d reveals that Miranda has left her career and went back to school to become a human rights advocate.<\/p>\n<p>That leads to the much-discussed scene when Miranda meets her teacher for the first time and delivers a cringe-inducing speech trying to paint herself as sufficiently progressive. Fans couldn\u2019t figure out if the scene was intentionally embarrassing or accidentally awful. Nixon swears it\u2019s the former option.<\/p>\n<p>The actress called the overall script, \u201cso delicious\u201d and claimed Miranda\u2019s blunder was meant to make a point.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know all of the original characters have their hearts in the right place, and that they\u2019re trying to do their best, but they\u2019re very often slipping on a banana peel and falling down,\u201d Nixon told Elle. \u201cAnd that\u2019s the nature of comedy, right?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ultimately, Nixon says the focus of \u201cAnd Just Like That\u201d is on strong female friendships, and how those have changed over the years. We\u2019ll see as the season goes on that when we\u2019re having conflicts, they can still be big, passionate eruptions, but I think we heal from them quicker.
