Victoria Spartz and Jim Banks, cite researchers from the University of Toronto who <a href=\"https:\/\/citizenlab.ca\/2021\/08\/engrave-danger-an-analysis-of-apple-engraving-censorship-across-six-regions\/\">found<\/a> that the tech giant broadly censors political content in mainland China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. The company\u2019s refusal to engrave certain terms contradicts its public statement on human rights, the Republicans argue, while going beyond what Chinese law requires for content censorship.<\/p>\n<p>The Republicans are requesting a full list of the terms that Apple will not engrave on its products in mainland China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan, as well as the company\u2019s justification for doing so in Hong Kong and Taiwan. Mainland China\u2019s laws on censorship do not apply in Hong <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2020\/05\/28\/hong-kong-autonomy-china-national-security\/\">Kong<\/a>, and Taiwan provides broad free speech protections for its residents. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/11\/24\/joe-biden-administration-invite-taiwan-summit-democracy-su-tseng-chang-xi-jinping\/\">(RELATED: Biden Admin Invites Taiwan To \u2018Summit For Democracy,\u2019 China Calls It A \u2018Mistake\u2019)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs one of America\u2019s largest publicly traded companies, Apple owes transparency to American investors and the public regarding any involvement in aiding censorship by the Chinese government. Now, they\u2019re censoring on behalf of the Communist Party. No company that\u2019s prospered off freedom should lobby against it at home or restrict it abroad,\u201d Banks added.<\/p>\n<p>The letter-writers note censored content like \u201cFalun Gong,\u201d \u201cAi Weiwei,\u201d \u201cFreedom of the Press\u201d and \u201cHuman Rights,\u201d adding that Apple\u2019s policies \u201cappear to go beyond legal mandates and regulations established within China.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany American companies operate within Communist China and the surrounding Asian markets,\u201d they add. \u201cSome companies, such as Meta (Facebook) and Twitter are banned in China or don\u2019t attempt to operate in China, opting to not submit their company and customers to the policy objectives and cultural constraints of the CCP.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In addition to its censorship practices, Apple has been accused of <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/05\/11\/ken-buck-apple-uyghur-xinjiang-forced-labor-genocide-lobbying\/\">employing<\/a> slave labor in its supply chain, while <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2018\/07\/18\/report-apple-china-privacy\/\">providing<\/a> user data to a Chinese state-owned telecommunications company.
