The carving is neither in India nor 2,000 years old.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span>Fact Check:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Panchavarneswara Temple is a Hindu temple located in the Indian city of Tiruchirapalli, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20050208020318\/http:\/\/www.hindu.com\/fr\/2004\/11\/05\/stories\/2004110503201000.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Hindu<\/a>. The temple dates back to the 9th century, the outlet reported.<\/p>\n<p>An image shared on Facebook purportedly shows a stone carving found within that temple that appears to show a man riding a bicycle. \u201cDid you know? This is 2,000 year old bicycle from Panchavarnaswamy Temple,\u201d reads text included in the image.&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/checkyourfact.com\/2021\/04\/12\/fact-check-video-holi-fireworks-atal-tunnel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: Does This Video Show Holi Fireworks At India\u2019s Atal Tunnel?)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>While the circumstances of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/technology\/bicycle\">bicycle<\/a>\u2018s invention are a matter of historical debate, there is no evidence the vehicle existed prior to the 18th century, much less 2,000 years ago. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.edu\/spotlight\/si-bikes\/si-bikes-velocipede\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Smithsonian<\/a> states the first bicycle appeared in Paris in 1791 but notes that no one person can be credited with its invention.<\/p>\n<p>An internet search reveals the stone carving featured in the Facebook post is not actually a 2,000-year-old sculpture from Panchavarneswara Temple, but rather a 20th century sculpture found on the door of a palace in Nigeria. An image of the entire door can be found on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.quaibranly.fr\/en\/explore-collections\/base\/Work\/action\/show\/notice\/293857-porte\/page\/1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">website<\/a> of the Quai Branly Museum, an <a href=\"https:\/\/us.france.fr\/en\/paris\/article\/quai-branly-museum\">art museum<\/a> in Paris dedicated to non-Western art. The image\u2019s caption on the website explains the art adorns the palace door and was created by <a href=\"https:\/\/emuseum.nasher.duke.edu\/people\/1823\/areogun-of-osiilorin;jsessionid=D665141BD1A49B40F416E7EBDBAF5317\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Areogun Osi-Ilorin<\/a>, an African sculptor, in the early 20th century, well after the invention of the bicycle.<\/p>\n<p>It is worth mentioning that the Panchavarneswara Temple does feature a carving of a person riding a bicycle, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thequint.com\/news\/webqoof\/fake-news-bicycle-carving-in-south-indian-temple#read-more\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Quint<\/a>.
