During their conversation, the 49-year-old star made it sound like his ex-wife Jennifer Garner was the main catalyst for his past alcohol abuse.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe probably would\u2019ve ended up at each other\u2019s throats,\u201d Affleck told Stern, <a href=\"https:\/\/pagesix.com\/2021\/12\/14\/ben-affleck-id-still-be-drinking-if-i-stayed-married-to-jennifer-garner\/\">according<\/a> to PageSix. \u201cI probably still would\u2019ve been drinking. \u2026 Part of why I started drinking was because I was trapped.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But now that fans are slamming the actor\u2019s comments, he\u2019s backtracking while claiming the whole conversation requires context, not just one little snippet. Affleck sat down with Jimmy Kimmel on Wednesday night to try and clear his name.<\/p>\n<p>Affleck said the quotes making round on social media, \u201cmade it seem as if I was saying the exact opposite of what I said.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He explained, \u201cI had gone on and said how much we respect each other and cared about each other and cared about our kids and put them first and went through our stuff.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Affleck said the quote made him sound like he, \u201cblamed my ex-wife for my alcoholism and that I was trapped in this marriage\u2026 just made me out to be like the worst, most insensitive, stupid, awful guy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But the Academy Award winner claims none of these claims represent how he really feels, E News <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/1313533\/ben-affleck-sets-the-record-straight-on-those-jennifer-garner-comments\">reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s not true,\u201d Affleck told Kimmel. \u201cI don\u2019t believe that. It\u2019s the exact opposite of who I am, what I believe and I would never want my kids to think I would ever say a bad word about their mom\u2026 it hurts my feelings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Originally, the actor had explained that turning to alcohol was a way of coping with stress and depression. But he stayed in the marriage despite being unhappy for the sake of the three children Garner and Affleck share.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was like, \u2018I can\u2019t leave because of my kids, but I\u2019m not happy, what do I do?\u2019 And what I did was [I] drank a bottle of scotch and fell asleep on the couch, which turned out not to be the solution,\u201d the \u201cJustice League\u201d star told Stern during their conversation.<\/p>\n<p>Eventually, he and Garner agreed that they didn\u2019t want their relationship to \u201cbe the model that our kids see of marriage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And this wasn\u2019t the first time Affleck got personal about his struggle with alcoholism. The Daily Wire reported that the star <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/ben-affleck-calls-divorce-biggest-regret-details-alcoholism-struggle\">detailed his addiction<\/a> during a 2020 interview as well.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople with compulsive behavior, and I am one, have this kind of basic discomfort all the time that they\u2019re trying to make go away,\u201d the actor told The New York Times in 2020. \u201cYou\u2019re trying to make yourself feel better with eating or drinking or sex or gambling or shopping or whatever. But that ends up making your life worse. Then you do more of it to make that discomfort go away. Then the real pain starts. It becomes a vicious cycle you can\u2019t break.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He continued, blaming himself for harming his marriage. \u201cI drank relatively normally for a long time\u2026.What happened was that I started drinking more and more when my marriage was falling apart.
