(Source: Jefferson County Jail)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h5>OAN Newsroom<br \/>UPDATED 7:11 PM PT \u2013 Wednesday, December 15, 2021<\/h5>\n<p>A convicted kidnapper is on the run after being accidentally released from jail in Alabama.<\/p>\n<p>The Jefferson County Sheriff\u2019s Office began searching for 35-year-old Matthew Burke, who was mistakenly released from jail in Birmingham on Friday. Burke was sentenced by a judge to 17 years in federal prison for kidnapping and bank fraud.<\/p>\n<p>However, Burke was being held at Jefferson County Jail while he awaited a court hearing on a state charge. He was mistakenly released after his state charges were dropped.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">NEW:Matthew Burke, who pleaded guilty to kidnapping Bham businessman Elton Stephens, Jr., was accidentally released from Jefferson Co. It wasn\u2019t discovered until Monday afternoon that Burke should have been transferred to federal prison.<\/p>\n<p>Burke pleaded guilty to kidnapping prominent businessman Elton B. Stephens Jr. in 2020, in addition to attempting to extort $250,000.
