For example,&nbsp;Spain \u2013 where the Miami Dolphins and Chicago Bears are designated to promote their brand, also appears in red, but a significant number of regions of Spain away from the mainland \u2013 the Canary and Balearic Islands, Ceuta and Melilla in Africa \u2013 do not.<\/p>\n<p>The NFL announced that 18 professional teams will have access to \u201ceight different countries\u201d and did not independently list the country of Taiwan as one of them in its official <a href=\"https:\/\/nflcommunications.com\/Documents\/NFL%20ANNOUNCES%20INTERNATIONAL%20HOME%20MARKETING%20AREA%20TEAMS%20AND%20MARKETS%20(FINAL).pdf\">press release<\/a>. The league said:<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<blockquote readability=\"11\">\n<p>This ground-breaking, new initiative grants clubs access to international territories for marketing, fan engagement and commercialization as part of an important, long-term, strategic effort to enable clubs to build their global brands while driving NFL fan growth internationally.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Christopher Halpin, NFL Executive Vice President, Chief Strategy &amp; Growth Officer, further hailed the new initiative as allowing NFL teams to \u201cdevelop meaningful, direct relationships with NFL fans abroad, driving fan growth and avidity globally.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The clubs will begin activities in their assigned international market at the start of the new year and will have access to those markets for at least five years, during which a \u201cclub will have rights to pursue activities in that international market that are consistent with what they can do in their domestic HMA,\u201d according to the release.<\/p>\n<p>The NFL\u2019s attempts to expand into international markets have not exactly translated into big dollars or a major fanbase. In London, for instance, the league has held <a href=\"https:\/\/profootballtalk.nbcsports.com\/2021\/10\/07\/nfl-to-play-29th-and-30th-london-games-has-still-never-matched-two-winning-teams\/\">as many as 30 games,&nbsp;<\/a>none of which have included top-tier teams or generated significant audience interest.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt would be bad foreign policy if another nation agreed to import food from American farms and we sent them boat after boat filled with rancid, expired meat. So why do we continue to export our rancid, expired football teams?\u201d noted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theringer.com\/nfl\/2021\/10\/15\/22727909\/london-nfl-games-experiment-jaguars\">The Ringer<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Expanding into international markets could possibly stem from the NFL\u2019s decline in U.S. ratings in recent years, especially in the much-desired under 50 demographic. As Breitbart News<a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/sports\/2021\/02\/10\/nfl-hemorrhaging-young-viewers-under-50-super-bowl-viewership-declines-ninth-straight-year\/\"> reported<\/a> in early 2021:<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B3\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<blockquote readability=\"11\">\n<p>According to Sports Media Watch, Super Bowl 55 saw a decline in the 18 to 49 viewer demographic for the ninth year running. The 2021 Super Bowl lost another 37 percent of viewers in that age demo over last year\u2019s audience.<\/p>\n<p>But this year\u2019s number is just another dip compared to past years. The game lost 43 percent in young viewers four years ago and 51 percent in 2008.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Beyond the NFL, the National Basketball Association (NBA) has doggedly pursued the Chinese market, with an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/sports\/nba\/2019\/10\/09\/nba-china-hong-kong-whats-at-stake\/3912447002\/\">estimated $500 million<\/a> in revenue, while censoring its players and coaches for fear of offending communist party leaders. This past November, when Enes Kanter Freedom of the Boston Celtics began wearing his \u201cFree Tibet\u201d sneakers, representatives of the NBA reportedly told him to stop; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/sports\/2021\/12\/09\/enes-kanter-freedom-nba-begged-me-to-remove-free-tibet-sneakers\/\">when he refused,<\/a>&nbsp;China banned all Celtics games from streaming in the country.<\/p>\n<p>Erasing Taiwan to appease communist China has become a common practice for corporations outside of sports looking to access the major market, as well. In one notable example, producers of the <em>Top Gun<\/em> sequel eliminated the Taiwanese and Japanese flags from the character Maverick\u2019s iconic jacket.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"9.6920731707317\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">There\u2019s a new Top Gun movie coming out. And Maverick is wearing the same leather jacket \u2013 only this time it\u2019s Communist Party of China-approved, so the Japanese and Taiwanese flag patches are gone (screenshot on right is from the new trailer)\u2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/gUxFNFNUKX\">pic.twitter.com\/gUxFNFNUKX<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Mark MacKinnon (@markmackinnon) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/markmackinnon\/status\/1152241649893945346?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 19, 2019<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>In May of this year, wrestler-turned-actor John Cena publicly apologized (in Mandarin) on the Chinese government-controlled social networking site Weibo <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/entertainment\/2021\/05\/25\/fast-furious-star-john-cena-apologises-for-calling-taiwan-a-country\/\">after he referred<\/a> to Taiwan as a \u201ccountry\u201d when promoting the new <em>Fast &amp; Furious<\/em> movie ahead of its China release.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI did many, many interviews for Fast &amp; Furious 9, and I made a mistake during one interview,\u201d Cena said in the video. \u201cI must say, which is very very important, that I love and respect China and Chinese people. I\u2019m very, very sorry for my mistake. I apologize.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Taiwan is a sovereign nation with separate political, military, academic, and cultural institutions from China. The island has never been ruled by a government based in Beijing. Despite this, the Communist Party incorrectly insists that Taiwan is a rogue \u201cprovince\u201d of China. In 2019, dictator Xi Jinping <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/asia\/2019\/10\/14\/bones-ground-to-powder-xi-jinping-threatens-gruesome-death-for-hong-kong-taiwan\/\">threatened<\/a> Taiwan and all the nation\u2019s supporters that China would have their \u201cbones ground to powder\u201d if they continued to resist the Party\u2019s conquest.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The National Football League (NFL) published a map on social media Thursday incorrectly depicting the sovereign nation of Taiwan as part of China.
