ZESA blamed the supply failures on renovations allegedly taking place at the Kariba Dam project, which dams the Zambezi River.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cZESA Holdings would like to advise its valued customers countrywide that there is an increase in load shedding outside the publicised schedules due to the refurbishment works on the Kariba Dam wall,\u201d ZESA\u2019s statement read.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe refurbishment works have resulted in the taking out of 3 units at Kariba South Hydro Power Station today, 14th December 2021,\u201d the statement continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[T]his has resulted in depressed generation, resulting in an increase in load shedding. Customers are advised to use the available power sparingly to minimise the effects of load shedding,\u201d ZESA added.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Kariba Dam Rehabilitation Project (KDRP)\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Fs-RJ3K7xvU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<p>New Zimbabwe described ZESA\u2019s grid failure on Tuesday as the latest example of a \u201cdecades-old electricity problem\u201d in Zimbabwe caused by the nation\u2019s \u201cdeep-economic crisis [which is] underlined by corruption, waste of public money, mismanagement, and failure to reform.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>ZESA shares ownership of the&nbsp;Kariba Dam project together with Zambia\u2019s state-owned power grid, ZESCO. (Photo credit should read JEKESAI NJIKIZANA\/AFP via Getty Images)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The Dinson Iron and Steel Company (Dinson), which is a subsidiary of China\u2019s Tsingshan Holding Group Company Ltd., \u201cformed a public-private partnership [with ZESA] to construct 97 kilometres [60 miles] of a high voltage power line that will connect [a] $1 billion iron and steel plant to the national electricity grid,\u201d <em>China Daily<\/em> <a href=\"http:\/\/global.chinadaily.com.cn\/a\/202112\/13\/WS61b7418da310cdd39bc7b12a.html\">reported<\/a> on December 13.<\/p>\n<p>The newspaper, owned by the Publicity Department of China\u2019s ruling Communist Party, revealed on Monday ZESA had already encountered unspecified issues that delayed the project\u2019s early development.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA delay in the construction of the power line has held back the construction of the plant touted to become the biggest steel manufacturer in the Southern African Development Community,\u201d <em>China Daily<\/em> reported.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a strategic national project. It (steel plant) will be largest customer project for ZESA, requiring up to 500 MW in the next two years, which is equivalent to almost a third of today\u2019s national consumption,\u201d ZESA Executive Chairman Sydney Gata told Zimbabwe\u2019s the <em>Sunday Mail<\/em> in recent days.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cApart from creating thousands of jobs, the project will revive the country\u2019s collapsed steel industry, which is currently relying on imports from South Africa,\u201d <em>China Daily<\/em> noted of the Dinson-ZESA project.
