Tommy Gregory, a Sarasota area lawmaker who filed the bill, said he wants to make sure a similar situation does not occur in Florida.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI haven\u2019t seen any Mark Cuban-type, what I would view as anti-American, protests against our anthem or our flag but I certainly want to make sure that sort of negative activism is avoided, prohibited actually, if they want to do business with the government, and most of them do,\u201d he told the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heraldtribune.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2021\/12\/15\/florida-pro-sports-bill-requires-national-anthem-played-before-games\/8907105002\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Herald-Tribune<\/a> on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>The proposed law, HB 499, was first filed in November. Greg Abbott\u2019s desk for signature.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The anthem snub by the Mavericks, which lasted 13 games (including some pre-seasons games), was said to be \u201cthe first instance we know of a pro sports team striking the U.S. anthem from the pre-game,\u201d according to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/tim_cato\/status\/1359302274577801217\">Tim Cato<\/a>, the reporter who broke the story for The Athletic.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Cuban confirmed to Cato that he was the one who decided the Mavs should pull the anthem.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cNone of 13 preseason and regular-season games played at the American Airlines Center this season have featured the anthem before the game, including Monday\u2019s game against the Minnesota Timberwolves, the first played this season with a limited amount of fans in attendance,\u201d Cato&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/theathletic.com\/2376670\/2021\/02\/09\/dallas-mavericks-anthem-nba-mark-cuban\/\">reported<\/a>&nbsp;at the time. \u201cThe Mavericks did not publicize the anthem\u2019s removal, and The Athletic was the first media organization to reach out about the change after noticing its absence on Monday.
