It is expected to pass by the planet at a distance of about 745,000 miles by 2060, though that approach will still be beyond the moon\u2019s orbit, the outlet reported.<\/p>\n<p>In the viral Facebook post\u2019s photo, a bright green streak can be seen in the sky high above an urban area at night. The Dec. 12 post <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/permalink.php?story_fbid=193585282983185&amp;id=100069951433681\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">alleges<\/a>, \u201cThis is that asteroid that just missed earth about a day ago, in the skies over India\u2026.\u201d <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/checkyourfact.com\/2020\/03\/04\/fact-check-international-space-station-ufo-video\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: Did The International Space Station Film A UFO For 22 Minutes?)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The picture predates Nereus\u2019 recent close approach to Earth by several years, a reverse image search revealed. National Geographic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalgeographic.com\/contests\/article\/photo-contest-2016-winners\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">awarded<\/a> the photo an honorable mention in its 2016 Nature Photographer of the Year contest. The magazine credited the photo, titled \u201cSerendipitous Green Meteor,\u201d to photographer&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.prasenjeetyadav.com\/about#live-to-ride\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Prasenjeet Yadav<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Yadav has worked as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalgeographic.org\/find-explorers\/prasenjeet-udhamsingh-yadav\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">National Geographic Explorer<\/a> and has taken photos for the organization. The picture of the meteor was taken in October 2015, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/2017\/01\/bright-green-meteor-lights-mountains-india\/?fbclid=IwAR11kd2e0han0tD8J1I12MwdtwHuqoxIz502QKRvgx6gPrd7jhhe1BrKscc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wired<\/a>, and he&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/BuG5SuvAEdT\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">posted<\/a> it on Instagram in 2019.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis GreenMeteor was captured while taking a time-lapse to document the urbanization around the Skyislands southern in India. The camera was set at 15s exposure for 999 shots and this came into one of those shots,\u201d Yadav explained in the Instagram post\u2019s caption. \u201cGreen Meteor\u2019s greenish color come from a combination of the heating of oxygen around the meteor and the mix of minerals ignited as the rock enters Earth\u2019s atmosphere.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Black-and-white <a href=\"https:\/\/echo.jpl.nasa.gov\/asteroids\/Nereus\/nereus.018.movie.gif\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">radar images<\/a> of 4660 Nereus were included in a <a href=\"https:\/\/echo.jpl.nasa.gov\/asteroids\/Nereus\/4660_Nereus_planning.html#Tracks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">NASA planning report<\/a>.
