Kim Reynolds, Wyoming Gov. Mark Gordon, Alaska Gov.&nbsp;Mike Dunleavy, Mississippi Gov.&nbsp;Tate Reeves, and Nebraska Gov.&nbsp;Pete Ricketts were the Republicans included as signers of the letter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe federal government continues to overreach further into the lives of Americans and especially those serving our country and protecting our very freedoms,\u201d Reynolds said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/governor.iowa.gov\/press-release\/gov-reynolds%C2%A0four%C2%A0other%C2%A0governors-send-letter-to-dod-requesting-withdraw-of-vaccine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese are the very men and women who have selflessly devoted their lives to protecting us and responding to major disasters and times of crisis at the drop of a hat to provide peace and comfort, and now the federal government is giving them an ultimatum to get the vaccine or be separated from serving their country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s unconscionable to think the government will go so far as to strip these honorable men and women of the nation\u2019s top duties if they don\u2019t comply. They protect the very freedoms that the federal government apparently doesn\u2019t believe they too deserve,\u201d she continued.<\/p>\n<p>The vaccine mandate encompasses approximately <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalguard.mil\/Resources\/Press-Releases\/Article\/2474123\/25k-authorized-50-states-three-territories-and-dc-supporting-presidential-inaug\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">440,000<\/a> soldiers and airmen in the National Guard.<\/p>\n<p>On December 2, Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt filed a lawsuit against the Biden administration to stop the vaccine requirement for National Guard members in his state.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTherefore, unless mobilized by the President of the United States under U.S. Code Title10, I retain the authority for all training and governance of the Oklahoma National Guard \u2013 including determining if and how training guidelines issued by the president will be implemented,\u201d Stitt said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/oklahoma.gov\/governor\/newsroom\/newsroom\/2021\/december\/governor-stitt--attorney-general-o-connor-sue-biden-administrati.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis week, Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin declared his intention to proceed with unconstitutional punishment that individually targets Oklahoma National Guard soldiers and airmen, including withholding their pay,\u201d the governor added.<\/p>\n<p>The Daily Wire <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/defense-secretary-unvaccinated-national-guard-members-cannot-train-be-paid\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a> on December 1:<\/p>\n<p><em>Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin said that members of the Army National Guard who refuse to comply with the Biden administration\u2019s vaccine mandate would be prohibited from undergoing the required training and drills they need to maintain their status as Guardsmen.&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>In an internal memo to leaders of the armed forces, according to the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/coronavirus-pandemic-health-lloyd-austin-41588147165feeb223ff729f1a1cb465\">Associated Press<\/a>, Austin spelled out the new policy, directing leaders of the four service branches to publish guidance dealing with men and women serving in the National Guard who refuse the vaccine. \u201cVaccination is essential to the health and readiness of the force,\u201d Austin said.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The vaccine requirement is part of the military\u2019s medical readiness requirements, the AP reported.
